I help software developers secure their work supporting research and higher education.

Here you may find my occasional blog posts with DevOps recipes or example code in obscure programming languages.

Check out my other Mastodon for silly sketches and art generated using code.

@strangequark The number of places salivating about dynamic pricing is really quite scary. So many supermarkets are thrilled with the idea of it. Every time I'm in ASDA recently they are pushing "why don't you use your phone to shop" while making noises like a mantis clicking.
@CppGuy @neil the beginner can't quit vim, but once you realize you no longer want to then you are enlightened

@neil

See? Even experts can't quit vim. 😜

Neil: There's a wealth of amazing Free software out there! I use loads of it.

Them: What do you use to write documents?

Me: I use vim. I write in Markdown, then convert it. (typst + pandoc)

Them: What about presentations?

Me: I use vim. I write in Markdown, then convert it. (revealjs)

Them: Your website? Blog?

Me: I use vim. I write in Markdown, then convert it. (mkdocs / bssg)

Them: So what about keeping notes?

Me: Oddly enough, I use vim. I write in Markdown... (vimwiki)

I was looking up dijkstra quotes and i found a good one i don't remember seeing before:

My point today is that, if we wish to count lines of code, we should not regard them as "lines produced" but as "lines spent": the current conventional wisdom is so foolish as to book that count on the wrong side of the ledger.

@MikeFromLFE thank you!

I wasn't sure which way I would go, when push came to shove.

Modern cars seem to all be full of spyware, but my preference for gently used cars has kept it from being my problem.

So I've pondered:

How much do I value not dealing with spyware in my vehicle?

Today I learned I value it enough to pay to rebuild the engine of my pre-spyware vehicle.

My little OS roll call has officially escalated.

I expected a few Linux users.
I did not expect a full Unix archaeology department, several BSD wizards, people running obscure systems I have never heard of, and someone casually mentioning a C64.

Mastodon is not social media.
Mastodon is a nerd tavern with federation.

And honestly? I love it here.

@MikeFromLFE oh nice! I'll definitely upgrade for an added backlight.

@MikeFromLFE the XTeInk X4 eReader is an utter delight! Even better with the
Crosspoint firmware!

I would love to have a version with a back light, but having an ebook constantly in my pocket is the best thing ever.
