Supra-orbital whiskers act as wind-sensing antennae in rats

Animals rely on sensory processing of airflow (anemotaxis) to guide navigation and survival. This study uses structural, electrophysiological and behavioral analyses to reveal that an under-studied subset of whiskers, the supra-orbital whiskers, act as wind antennae in rats.

Why does understanding the biology of fibroblasts in immunity really matter?

Fibroblasts have traditionally been thought of as structural cells, but technological advances have started to uncover important roles for fibroblasts in immune function. This Essay looks at why understanding the biology of fibroblasts really matters for health and disease.

Biochemist Gertrude B. Elion was born #OTD in 1918.

Co-winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Medicine, she developed a remarkable array of important pharmaceuticals using “rational drug design” that focused on differences in the biochemistry of healthy cells and pathogens.

In 1870, Alfred Russel Wallace won a £500 bet (that’s about $50,000 today, give or take) with a flat Earther named John Hampden.

He won the bet by demonstrating the curvature of the Earth along a six mile stretch of the Old Bedford river.

Hampden, publicly humiliated, threatened to kill Wallace and was jailed.

Alfred Russel Wallace, who independently conceived of a theory of evolution via natural selection, and whose work was presented alongside that of Darwin in a paper read to the Linnean Society in 1858, was born #OTD in 1823.
