Don't mind me leeching

Welp, after 21 years with Blizzard Entertainment, I was laid off today. What an incredible journey. I got to be part of challenging, exciting projects, and I played a part in shaping the company's voice for over two decades.

One thing you learn living in California is that the most intense growth usually follows after a wildfire. Some plants even require fire to release their seeds.

So we'll see what comes next. If you need an editor on your team, hit me up.

The Minor Planet Center has designated 3I/ATLAS = C/2025 N1 (ATLAS), or informally "Comet ATLAS", a new interstellar comet that is currently about 4.5 AU from the Sun and screaming through the solar system at 58 km/s (130000 mph)

Good friend of mine released a lovely post punk flavoured drone ambient album this weekend. Give it a listen

A reminder that pride is not over, it's Disability Pride month!
This is important to remember, especially in hard times

RCE Security has found major vulnerabilities in the Wind FTP server.

Attackers can bypass authentication on the server's web interface just by appending a NULL byte to the username followed by any random string.

What the NULL?! Wing FTP Server RCE (CVE-2025-47812) | RCE Security

@Prozak

1 - Only expose what you need to.

2 - Keep your shit patched.

3 - Segment and isolate exposed systems to minimize lateral movement.

4 - Use "strong" ( whatever that means in your environment ) authentication and change defaults.

5 - Don't stress over it. It's just computers.

TIL in Firefox about:config:

widget.gtk.overlay-scrollbars.enabled = false
widget.non-native-theme.gtk.scrollbar.thumb-size = 1
widget.non-native-theme.scrollbar.style = 4
widget.non-native-theme.scrollbar.size.override = 16

Gets you scrollbars that are actually visible and clickable with the mouse.

Back in the day, Twitter used to be really good if I set up a thread to connect freelancers with clients. Let's see if Mastodon can do it.

Clients: if you're looking for freelancers/contractors, get in the comments

Freelancers/contractors: get in the comments

Everyone else: boosts appreciated.

The market is *dead* for freelancers and a big part of that (in my opinion) is fragmentation. Let's get that network effect *back*.

#curl user survey 2025 respondents like Mastodon:
@bagder Poor RSS 😩
@annika RSS is not a channel. It's a medium to other media. One can subscribe to a Mastodon feed via RSS, so there is no collision here.
bagder@mastodon.social
@piero It would seem to indicate that few respondents care whether updates are available via RSS, regardless of channel. So, 😩
@annika Perhaps I am just refusing to see 😞 Still RSS per se is hardly a publishing / communication format in itself. It's sort of a different view on the data. But yeah, feeds lost its product visibility thanks to Mozilla and this has consequences.

@piero @annika Maybe the "use more" is the problem? There's plenty of curl related rss goodness available here:

https://daniel.haxx.se/blog/feed/

@EndlessMason @annika This sparked a flashback to the original 2010 Mozilla's reasoning behind dropping RSS icon from the URL bar that it was used "rarely". Things is RSS et al. are actually technologies that were designed to be used (interacted with) rarely.

@piero @annika The first 3 bookmarks on my bookmark bar are my fedi server, the unread page on my rss reader and a bookmarklet to submit the current page to my rss readers' "subscribe to the feed for this page"

I definitely use use "add to feed reader" more often because of all the fun little weirdos on fedi, but even then I want it to be smooth rather than having to share-via or copy/paste a url...

In fact, I only bookmark things if the "add to reader" action doesn't find a feed at all...

@bagder

I love that you wrote "survey respondents" and not "curl users" or something like that.

@Michael I think this rather shows more who I managed to reach when I begged people to respond to the survey than what the average curl users might want...

@bagder

And I've seen a lot of (not representative) surveys that claimed to show what the users/general group think.
It kinda stands out (in a really positive way) that you make it clear what the result means and what it doesn't mean.

@bagder X is still too popular IMHO
@bagder how tf is RSS the lowest
@Ember @bagder it is the highest, cause mastodon includes rss 😈
@bagder crazy that IRC is higher than matrix
@poolitzer @bagder this *is* curl after all
@bagder 1% wants more communication on facebook. That's surprisingly high.
@loke @bagder The same amount want facebook as want zoom calls ... I think that pretty much sums it up
@bagder RSS is so far :-(
@bagder Honestly, I'm surprised to see IRC so high! Would have thought most people went onto Matrix or something similar.

@bagder Who needs bug trackers when you have posts here:-)

#type-feature

@bagder I’m curious: how many respondents were there, to put the percentages into perspective?
@WiteWulf 733 persons answered that specific question, out of the 1,140 that participated in the survey
@bagder good old RSS... in love with Mastodon
@bagder What, MS Teams didn't even make the list?
@bagder I *really* like to see #IRC has a slight edge on #matrix 😏
@bagder TIL roughly 5% of people are complete idiots (feel free to choose which 5% group you think I'm talking about so as to exclude yourself)
@bagder For the sake of interest: how large is the statistical sample

@kurb70

At least 250, otherwise there wouldn't be a 0.4%.
I doubt many more than that because that would mean that multiple individuals actually would like RSS as a communication channel, and I'm not ready to enter *that* timeline.

@bagder

@bagder I use RSS very actively, its actually sad to see whats happening to it. I do wonder how one could make more folks aware of it and how to use it, because for me it was a black box until a few years ago when I set up my own aggregator and took the plunge. I use it for my goto news feed every day since.
