I got Deutsche Bahned and am sitting in Heilbronn right now 🙈

But I just saw a train on the opposite side with carriages that look like the ones I travelled in decades ago - just some new paint ...

@bagder Doesn’t feel like the appropriate metaphor, since the relationship in the picture is symbiotic, they both benefit:

> birds that land on elephants and spend their days eating lice, ticks, and other parties out of the elephants’ skin and hair. The elephants benefit by having dangerous critters removed from their bodies, and the oxpeckers get a snack and a free ride. It’s also been seen that oxpeckers, like the olive baboons, warn elephants of danger when they spot predators, by emitting loud screams.

https://globalelephants.org/elefact-friday-symbiotic-relationships-in-the-wild/

On the other hand, the point I think you’re trying to make is about the parasitic relationship of some closed-source software towards open-source. Perhaps an image of a leech would be more appropriate.

EleFact Friday: Symbiotic Relationships in the Wild

We’ve shared before about how the elephants in sanctuary interact with the other critters around the property. From dogs to tapirs to goats and sheep, the five girls seem to get along with almost everyone, or at least are able to exist peacefully beside each other.

Global Sanctuary for Elephants
@vitor yeah, getting a perfect metaphor is difficult. I went with the sizes and something sitting on top.
@bagder And the money is the inverse. If we as a society funded open source (really funded people) things would be a lot better.
@bagder Not pictured; scraping strips off the elephant in order to build an LLM to attract VCs to its nest.
@bagder … speaking of analogies and images: Such an iceberg wouldn’t be oriented like that in the water, it would shift and “lay to its side”.

@goetz @bagder Like here? https://joshdata.me/iceberger.html

You don't know about the third dimension though.

Iceberger

@bagder and the most of this hide open source part lives completely no sponsored by anyone
@bagder @javierlopezdeancos yeah… my stuff is used in Android, but what I remember were the 25 EUR from a private user who’s a fan, and getting a t-shirt gifted to me by a user at FOSDEM…

@bagder
So true...

If closed source tech bros actually were useful to the world, then icebergs would float around upside down with 90% of their mass above water. But that's not how it works, so why does 10% of the code in the world get so hundreds of billions from humanity each yeat to enrich a few assholes at the top?

I pay my favorite developers through Patreon and recurring PayPal, but we need better ways to give back to those who keep the internet working despite the shithead tech bros.

@bagder

and ➊ is volunteered time

@bagder
According to my experience, a lot of it being 10+ years without updates.
@koehntopp @bagder
It requires corrections for 10 years, or, due to nature of software, vs physical artifacts, it has been delivering value for 10 years?
If it needs a correction, and you have a need, you know where to start, or pay someone to start "a wanted correction".
In fact, if you look closer at that lower part, those a barnacles of differently sized fixes. Join in.

@mikalai @bagder
I'm talking about projects consuming Open Source at some point, and never consuming any of the updated versions, which is a problem.

It's a bit like having a coder in your team, working for free, and ignoring her work all the time.

@koehntopp @bagder
Oh, yes. Let's not confuse code development and system operations.
When both dev and ops are forced on oss devs, poor souls get burned out.

@bagder I keep hearing about this - that most software these days is based on open source, with the last few per cent being added by corporate players (to add a shiny finish or UX, maybe).

But I'd like to be able to show this to people - do you have any source that I can share or cite?

@bagder Aha, thank you so much for this, I really appreciate it!
@clickhere @bagder
There's also the classic...

Dependency

xkcd
@faduda @bagder I love that so much - I used it in work recently to explain some things to managers and colleagues. It's perfect.

@clickhere @bagder

...and RUNK...

@faduda @bagder Oh god; but what if anything happens to Ronald or Random Nebraska Person..? 😬

@clickhere @faduda @bagder yep. exactly.

The answer is kind of that someone else maintains it, but the truth is that no-one maintains it, but everyone keeps using it, and when it breaks, it breaks everything.

@robincafolla @clickhere @faduda @bagder The important question is how many billions are being made due to the essentially free graft of Ronald and Nebraska person, and teams of others.
@robincafolla @faduda @bagder So you're saying there's hope, after all?
@clickhere @faduda @bagder do you mean hope that everything breaks? 😅
@bagder So in all practicality, what is preventing the open source community from taking over the last 10%?

@bagder

side note: icebergs aren't stable in that position (just try and float an ice-cube in a cup long-wise like that) 😆

Today I channeled my energy into this very unofficial but passionate petition for scientists to start drawing icebergs in their stable orientations. I went to the trouble of painting a stable iceberg with my watercolors, so plz hear me out. (1/4)
