Coin of Note is a personal project to share #numismatic information & images of coins or exonumia (tokens, medallions, etc) I enjoy. I love to learn about history & try to include interesting info. I hope you enjoy it! Always up for a numismatic chat :)

Current US commemorative coins continue to make headlines. This week it is the dime without an olive branch. Widely noted because it came out the same week Trump captured Venzuelan president Maduro, the coin had nothing to do with the current US administration and was in fact a nod to the US Revolutionary war that created the nation. But as the editor notes, "Despite the confusion and controversy, I'm glad it has people looking at their coins again".

I agree! Keep looking at your coins :)

Mike Markowitz wrote an article in CoinWeek on Medieval Coinage of Georgia. E-Sylum has an excerpt. (And I present a toot-sized excerpt of the excerpt!). Full article at: https://www.coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n12.html#article22

"The medieval coinage of Georgia reflects a remarkable intersection of cultures, empires, and religious traditions. Located in the Caucasus region between Europe and Asia, Georgia developed a distinctive monetary system during the Middle Ages. Georgian rulers issued coins influenced by Byzantine, Islamic, Persian, and Mongol traditions.

At the same time, these coins expressed the identity and authority of the Georgian kingdom."

The "Eureka Bar" is a a "massive 64-pound California Gold Rush sunken treasure gold ingot". A 933.34 troy ounces gold bar, recovered from the famed 1857 shipwreck of the SS Central America, known as the ‘Ship of Gold,' widely regarded as the largest surviving gold artifact of the California Gold Rush.

The bar is insured for $10 Million. Kagin's Digital are offering 1,500 "shares" of the bar, worth an average of $4,333 each. See the article in E-Sylum and the links there if interested: https://www.coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n12.html#article11

While I would never buy actual #coins from places like Temu, they are good for #religious pieces to add to my collection of #medallions with #bible quotes. Sometimes they are curious when you look closely though. Here is one.

1 Corinthians 16:13 says " Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong." - this piece quotes the second point and the shield is a symbolic image which matches the sentiment.

The other side has Archangel Michael standing over a serpent - straight out of Revelation 12:7-9. Though it references Psalm 46:1 which starts: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble"... Ok, the Archangel defending us from evil, fair enough.

But the text is "Just for today" which doesn't seem to fit at all... Oh and a Narcotics Anonymous square in circle image? Ok, I did get it from Temu...

Here is a great example of the need to record those little bits of history we come across. This check is uniface, brass, rectangular with a hole and the number 1593 stamped into it. There is no way to know where it came from or what it was used for. It's meaning would be lost to history.

Except, because this piece came from the estate of a worker there, I know that it came from the Bevercotes colliery in Nottinghamshire, UK, which was the first fully automated mine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bevercotes_Colliery

My understanding is the more common round checks with the colliery name were the worker's pay checks, and these ones were lamp checks, which would be placed near or on lamps, or taken from lamps, so miners would know when & if the lamps had been checked.

(Rectangle check is mine, the round one is from http://www.healeyhero.co.uk/rescue/individual/Bob_Bradley/Bk-6/B6-1993-P24.html and the colliery image is from Wikipedia)

A very Happy Feast day of Saint Patrick!

As the reverse of the medallion says:

"May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May God hold you in the palm of His hand."

This week's E-Sylum has an interesting article on the first savings bank in Ruthwell Scotland, encouraging his parishioners to save small amounts for future security. The post includes information on the Henry Duncan Savings Banks Museum and its place in history.

It's #MysteryCoin time!

With those distinctive keys and hat behind the shield, it shouldn't be TOO hard to guess the WHERE. And with "PAVLVS VI P.M. AN.IVB.MCMLXXV" around the edge, the WHEN should also be achievable... so what I'd like to know is the WHY? What is on the other side of this coin which makes it topical for the current season? Let us know, and we'll have the answer.... a little closer to Easter...

Not so much closer, as I'm about to work on the newsletter which will have the answer shortly.... but do let us know what you think! I'm sure some of my #Christian, #Catholic, #Bible reading followers can guess...

Facebook's unwillingness to show posts from the people I actually follow but show random things I might be interested in sometimes has interesting results. Today I saw this post by Sandra Deiana - coin designer:

"From plaster to metal.
My portrait of Pope Francis created for the Malta Coin Centre. The journey from the sculpted plaster model to the finished coin is always a fascinating transformation.
Every detail you see in metal begins with hours of sculpting by hand."

Speaking of #Tokens, and another #Numismatic #Book. This week's E-Sylum also has a review of the 2014 publication "British and Irish Copper Tokens of 1787-1804" by Jon Lusk: https://www.coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n10.html#article4

This large volume will be of interest to #British / #UK / #Irish #token collectors, if not already in your collection.
