Just this guy. Communications person, ex-IT journalist, interests include biology, running - love parkrun -, cycling, the weirdness that is SharePoint, usability. Teasing my daughters. Not a bad cook.
@ImprobableIsland You down at themoment? Can't seem to connect and I am bereft.

Bought myself a rather nice #Decathlon Triban Gravel 520, but the suggested front mudguard gave me problems with toe overlap. Can anyone suggest front mudguard that would fit the bike, but but which wouldn't hit my toes when turning?

Well, that's fun. Just had a Twitter account taken down for promoting violence. The offending tweet - in response to a company announcing that it was removing access to 3rd part automations was "You've shot yourself in the foot there". Not exactly the most incendiary message, I think :)

Could a #iOSDev sanity-check this for me?

LG's "ThinQ" app used to set my washing machine requests stupid amounts of data. On questioning this, LG claims:

"Each permission is needed to ensure the app functions properly. Make & Manage phone calls is needed to determine your country using USIM info. Access to photos, media, & files allows the app to determine your device’s storage space. Location is only used to search for networks when connecting your product over Wi-F".

Sounds Bullshit?

Nice feature I've just found in the iOS 17 beta -

If you go into Reminders and select list > Show Lift Info

there is now a List Type setting that can be set to 'Shopping'. If you do that, the contents of the list will automagically organise themselves under sub-headings - e.g, in my case

- Beverages
- Dairy, Eggs & Cheese
- Deli
- Fruit & Veg
- Household items
- Spices & Seasonings

... etc

Theheadings are dynamically created. Its quite night and saved me a bit of time on my weekly shop.

If you are a bit sick of the really quite bad official #FoxESS #Solar iOS app for reporting on your inverter, I highly recommend the independent and free 'Energy Stats' app - simple, elegant and includes a Shortcut actions, so now you can turn on appliances when your battery has good charge and it's sunny etc. https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/energy-stats/id1644492526
‎Energy Stats

‎Get an instant overview of how your FoxESS PV/Battery installation is performing! - If you have a battery you can see duration until full/empty - Automatically re-login - Graphs of inverter parameters - Historic statistics information - Show battery temperature - Modify battery charge times - Modif…

Got off my call with Reddit just now about the API. Bad news unless I come up with 20 million dollars (not joking). Appreciate boosts. https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/13ws4w3/had_a_call_with_reddit_to_discuss_pricing_bad/
📣 Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing. Bad news for third-party apps, their announced pricing is close to Twitter's pricing, and Apollo would have to pay Reddit $20 million per year to keep running as-is.

Hey all, I'll cut to the chase: 50 million requests costs $12,000, a figure far more than I ever could have imagined. Apollo made 7 billion...

Ok, so.

Tweets look really good when you send them in Messages on iOS/macOS. Mastodon posts… don’t. So I built a little tool that makes them much nicer to look at:

https://mstdn.link

Add ?to={any Mastodon post URL} to the end of that domain and when you send it to a friend, you get the nice looking preview. Of course the page makes it easy to paste a URL in. And there’s a Shortcut to make it even easier on iOS or macOS.
