So Google is now preventing people from removing location data from photos taken with Pixel phones.

Remember when Google's corporate motto was "don't be evil?"

Obviously, accurate location data on photos is more useful to a data mining operation like Google.

From Google: "Important: You can only update or remove estimated locations. If the location of a photo or video was automatically added by your camera, you can't edit or remove the location."

It's enshitification in action.

I've been mulling over why Kate Beaton's work, and especially her character art floors me so much, even though there are now lots of artists with similar styles. Here's what I think it is: what's astonishing in her work is that it somehow sneaks a massive amount of subtlety into characters who are ludicrous.

I’ve had many people asking me recently about Alt-text, so here what it is and how to use this feature:

Alt-text is used to add a text description to an image you upload so that people who use a screen reader can know what your image is.

HOW TO❓

1. On desktop, when writing a toot (post), you can add an image by clicking on the paperclip icon on the bottom menu on the left.

2. Once your image is uploaded, click on “! No description added” over you image.

3. You will then see a popup allowing you to add a text description of your image. Try to be as clear as possible in your description. It’s okay if it’s short.

4. Click “Apply” and that’s it! You can then publish your toot normally.

5. You can follow @PleaseCaption to remind you to add alt-text in case you forget 👍✨

People mention a lot how important hashtags are for discovery on mastodon/fedi, but one thing I never see mentioned is that when you follow or search for an HT, you only get results from posts that have federated to your instance (ie posts made/boosted by someone at least one person on your instance follows).

On huge instances, nbd; but on smaller ones, HTs may seem significantly less active than they really are.

If you like following HTs, boosting HTed posts makes it a more effective feature.
