Finland’s ‘visionary’ fight against disinformation teaches citizens to question what they see online

Finland’s media literacy education stretches beyond standard K-12 streams. Government agencies like KAVI work with 1,000 organizations — from news media to NGOs — to bring media literacy education to all citizens and in different formats.

Big Tech is Not Going to Save You

As Facebook and Twitter somehow get even worse, desperate internet users search for an escape to something better. Good luck with that.

We've been on Mastodon for *9* months now!

Time for a re-#introduction to the new folks here:
We are a trustworthy, nonprofit #News source, sharing the knowledge of academic experts on many topics.

Our team of editors identifies researchers studying topics that are timely, important or just plain interesting, and helps them write understandably for the public.

We give away all this #journalism for free.

If you know new people here who'd be interested, please boost.

No, Elon and Jack are not “competitors.” They’re collaborating.

Wherein I attempt to clarify a number of ridiculous and false narratives currently taking hold about Musk and Dorsey’s “rivalry.”

Here is the best coverage I have yet to see on #Bluesky, Dorsey, & Musk - by @davetroy, from October 2022 [thanks to @heliomass]. It identifies many of the issues that I have been talking about, and does a great job outlining many other concerns as well. https://davetroy.medium.com/no-elon-and-jack-are-not-competitors-theyre-collaborating-3e88cde5267d

The Toronto Star just published my op-ed calling on the #CBC to run its own Mastodon/fediverse server:

Opinion | Why the CBC should quit Twitter and run its own Mastodon server

Elon Musk’s decision to label the CBC as “government funded” is a good catalyst for public broadcasters to join the fediverse.

I wrote about ActivityPub, and why Elon Musk might have saved social networks by buying Twitter — just not at all in the way he meant to https://www.theverge.com/2023/4/20/23689570/activitypub-protocol-standard-social-network
Can ActivityPub save the internet?

Mozilla, Meta, Medium, Flipboard, Tumblr, and so many other companies are betting that the future of social networks looks more like email than it does Elon Musk’s Twitter. And they’re betting on a little-known protocol to make it happen.

It’s amazing to me that a significant number of Canadians have a problem with the idea of a media company owned by us - Canadian citizens - and that they are appalled at the (untrue) allegations that the CBC is swayed by the government that we - the citizens of Canada - elected.

Meanwhile, these same folks are completely unfazed that almost every single other media outlet is owned, controlled, and directed by a handful of rich white guys who don’t even live in our country.
