Timing is key. After wet Beartooth Plateau hike 3000-3200m, came round corner on drive down 2850m, suitcase size rock inside lane. Smaller ones outside. Just happened. Had get out clear the lane quick of 10-15kg boulders. Bad accident could have happened if some poor soul(s) been driving thru when they fell. Big problem US-212 here when 💦💦. Even tho we had over 25-35mm precip. on the 21st Beartooth Front, been so warm/dry since that forest floor in Lakefork Cyn dry, could 🔥. But sides and main stream of the Lake Fk. of Rock Crk. are high now w full snowmelt. Probably not peaking yet. Ran from 2200m start up 5K, then side detour Silver Crk. falls. 10 min up on weak trail. Higher w a bit of ice at bottom. Lots of old moose scat, but none recent. Moisture is coming this weekend, so glad. #climate #running #dogs #montana #mountains

We are fortunate be able to hike thru/around our ski area off-season. Probably get arrested ones like Alta or Mammoth Mtn. Strenuous 20K hike to 2865m top today from 2240m base. So much less ❄️ than last year, easy to get around. Not much mud either, drying out fast. Hope our cooler spell this weekend pans out. Wildflowers full swing S-facing slopes lower half. Able make it round the corner 2740m on Hellroaring Rd. that was drifted over 3 weeks ago. On our run 2300m to 2800m then back. Turned around where Sundance and I had only ever close brown bear encounter here 03JUL2021. Drifts further up. He behaved admirably at 16 months of age and got raw steak for dinner that evening 👍🏽. No bear today but little lake nearby was perfect for them cool off in. Warm 21C at start lite SW wind. Drying out fast. #climate #running #dogs #montana #gye #mountains

Warmest ever fall/winter GYE (and most of Wrn US, from here S and W). Mild Pacific chinook SW-W flow across all mtn. ranges mostly. Thus skimpiest snowpack I've ever seen this early Beartooth Plateau 3050-3335m. On the E downslope side of the 3335m pass. US-212 fully open now, busy, but not horrible today 👍🏽. Mild 10-13C lite SW wind. Our usual ski spot 3100-3300m was very patchy down low, made things tricky. Enjoyable still, kidz loving it, since 28C in town. #climate #skiing #dogs #montana #gye
