Australian. Atheist. Artist. Political left. ALP Left. No DMs. If you're on Twitter & want to check my profile a bit further you will find me @Anne_E_Huth
@allenholub I prefer text, too, for the same reasons you outlined plus I have a habit of losing focus when my mind goes wandering because video is too slow. So much more satisfying to quickly peruse text to find the interesting/important details.
EDIT: DO NOT BOOST!

This post is nearly a year old, and boosting will simply spread misinformation. Mastodon now has substantially more funding, and has enough scale to handle its many users.

I would delete this post but my server is not letting me so I'm editing this to reflect that I wish for you to NOT BOOST!

Right now Mastodon is only receiving appr. $21,000/month through Patreon.

This is not enough to handle the 1 million new accounts that will be made this week.

Currently, only 4,720 patrons are donating to Mastodon.

However, if everyone chips in $2/month, this will ensure the continued survival of Mastodon!

@MagdaSzubanski Join the club. My naivety betrays me. I'm a bit scared of speaking here in case I get it wrong.

Imagine trying to read through a post and your screenreader is reading "Here's my hashtag writing that I did for hashtag write daily where I used hashtag writing app on hashtag darkmode" (extreme example, but you get the idea).

There's no algorithm here where using, or not using, or using certain, tags will alter the visibility of your posts. They are only used as discovery aids, and people will look for the general hashtags that suit their interests.

@bettina My understanding is that the use of hashtags helps people find topics of common interest & connect with people with common interests. I'm new & still familiarising myself with the platform.

@scroeser Same. I'm just watching & waiting until I get the hang of things. Bit afraid to post much in case I get it wrong. I'll probably overuse the 'content warning' feature when I start making serious toots (need to get used to the words 'toots' as well).
A bit about me. I'm politically left, very interested in environmental issues, interested in science & humanities, an atheist who wants to live in a truly secular society, an artist & sometimes a bit outspoken. Supporter of Australia becoming a republic. Married to a rather conservative man so politics are rarely discussed at home.
