Working on another railway lantern. This one is in a pretty poor condition, which was reflected in the price. It also had an unidentified issue with the door, which meant it had a gap of about ½ an inch where the locking pin is supposed to slide in.
On investigation, someone at some point in the last ~50 years had curled the pin hinges back on themselves. With some gentle persuasion I managed to bend them back and what-do-you-know, the door works! There was no damage to them, so the reason shall remain a mystery!
I was then able to clear the rust and the paint remnants. I used a scotch mop on my polisher, which made light work of it.
Then it was ready for priming and painting.
