CNN is flummoxed, foundering, and ruderless. They might has well have had Vanna White at the debate, pointing to the next question. The Times is broken. The Post is being invaded from within. Murdoch's empire has been successful at its insurrectionist mission. Sinclair is accessory to that crime. Hedge funds control most newspaper chains. News media are a dire disaster and, no, it's not a crisis of business. It is a crisis of mission.

Susan Solomon led expeditions to Antartica in the 80's to confirm her hypothesis that the hole in its ozone layer was created by a reaction of ozone and chlorofluorocarbon free radicals on the surface of ice particles in high altitude clouds. Her studies formed the basis of the 1989 Montreal protocol – an international agreement that has helped eliminate 99% of CFCs.

Her latest book is "Solvable: How We Healed the Earth, and How We Can Do It Again".

Nex Benedict was a trans and nonbinary high school student in Oklahoma. They died on Feb. 8 after a group of students assaulted them in a school bathroom. They were 16 years old.

This is the world that anti-trans Republican legislators, administrators and influencers have built, with their dangerous rhetoric and their bottomless wells of hate. They weaponize kids against kids. They stole Nex's safety and they stole Nex's life.

Nex deserved so much better.

The gorgeous interior of the Paramount Theatre in Austin, TX. In the 1970s it was closed & badly in need of repairs, and almost was torn down to build a hotel. Due of the efforts of three men, it was instead saved and now is a vital part of the city's arts scene. Many wonderful places we take for granted were once endangered, and preservationists ensured they could be enjoyed for generations to come.

Find out more about why their efforts matter in my new article: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/column-preservation-of-abandoned-places?fbclid=IwAR1bTQS-KHlqwE6VI2YLuDo4L7zY20aRg0kHZ075tCILCaerewhP2U-FOWQ

Hmmm. I see this link on the Washington Post homepage: Billionnaire funding isn't ideal, but journalism needs it right now.
I click it.
And this is what I get:

"In England in the 19th Century there arose certain thinkers – John Ruskin, William Morris – who believed that the quality of material objects reflects and affects the quality of society, even of the spirit."

By those standards, I guess we're screwed.

A giant deep-sea isopod (Bathynomus giganteus) filmed by the ROV on Okeanos Explorer in the Gulf of Mexico at a depth of 810 meters (2,660 feet). This impressive underwater creature measures nearly 30cm (almost 1 foot), as indicated by the red laser dots, spaced 10cm apart, that provide scale to the scientists.

Rite Aid is a company that does not deserve your, or anyone's, patronage. And its flagrant misuse of facial recognition points to a further conclusion:

Facial recognition will always be misused. It should be banned, period.
