Susan Solomon led expeditions to Antartica in the 80's to confirm her hypothesis that the hole in its ozone layer was created by a reaction of ozone and chlorofluorocarbon free radicals on the surface of ice particles in high altitude clouds. Her studies formed the basis of the 1989 Montreal protocol – an international agreement that has helped eliminate 99% of CFCs.

Her latest book is "Solvable: How We Healed the Earth, and How We Can Do It Again".
