So now an OpenBSD porter updates IO-Tty and it only compiles with clang. Not GCC. Neither the ancient GCC in base nor GCC 15.2.0 in ports.

fix: modernize function detection for FreeBSD/Clang compat by toddr-bot · Pull Request #41 · cpan-authors/IO-Tty

Summary The old autoconf-style function detection in Makefile.PL used char $f () forward declarations that conflict with actual prototypes from system headers on modern compilers (especially on Fre...

@iaruffell I mean, I have not been much of a linux user so I definitely can't speak for any major distros.

I think the people involved prefer increasing marginilization to reducing it.

@iaruffell I saw this thread go by, suggesting as several others in this thread did, that it is mostly a specific entity in the ecosystem.

systemd has always been a lever of power; there’s no other reason to create an ecosystem of its shape. the person who grasps that lever is Lennart Poettering, and it always has been. I don’t need to write much on this; I watched the “oh shit” moment last week when systemd started accepting slop code, and again when an age verification mechanism was imposed on every systemd user and distro on Poettering’s final word. this was always the social structure on offer, enforced by a rigid ecosystem. 3/

New #blog post alert!

I muse about research some of my grad students and I did around independently evaluating some #OpenBSD anti-ROP mitigations, and I bid farewell to being an OpenBSD developer.

By digging through volcanic #ash, the #rodents brought vital mycorrhizal #fungi to the surface and sparked a #plant explosion that's still visible four decades later.

A bunch of gophers helped restore the plant life around Mount St. Helens after the devastating eruption in May 1980.

#BSDPizza was anything but pizza (Thai!) and with someone having had a birthday the day before and me knowing they don’t love being photographed… this is all I’ve got.

Thank you @AFresh1 for organizing this but sigh, you have a placeholder for me having missed so many over the years.

@mjg59 "Why yes, Mr. Chesterton, you *do* need a building permit for that fence."

Watched 2012 (the disaster movie) with bae the other day. I was fine with neutrinos microwaving the earth's core, sections of the earth's crust moving dozens of degrees, and other such nonsense, but my pedantic brain absolutely broke when it was revealed "both the president and vice-president are gone, so as Secretary of State, you are now the president".

That might have been the case in 1946, but this movie is set in 2012, and the 1947 Presidential Succession Act¹ makes it very clear that if both the president and vice-president are out of commission, then the office falls to the Speaker of the House or the president pro tempore of the Senate. CGP Grey even did a whole documentary on this².

I would have been okay if the movie said that the 1947 amendment to the Presidential Succession Act was deemed unconstitutional, which is a legitimate thing to investigate. But it didn't, ruining the believability of the entire movie.

Paolo #Benanti is an Italian Catholic priest and theologian known for his work in #ethics, particularly regarding artificial intelligence. He serves as an advisor to Pope Francis.

Peter Thiel is a wackadoodle billionaire touring the world giving "Make the antichrist great again" lectures. (Because he's a wackadoodle, that's why. Also, he thinks billionaires should be in charge and poors should be slaves or fertilizer. Did I mention the wackadoodle part?)

Peter "Bow Before Me" #Thiel decided to give a series of these lectures near the #Vatican. The Vatican rebuked him and has unleashed the Franciscan Ethicist, who wrote this: (Translated, Italian link on page)

American heresy: should Peter Thiel be burned at the stake?

This is a work of stunning beauty and knowledge. As #philosophy and #theology slapdowns go, this one will be in textbooks. I'm in awe. Literally in awe.
