OK, since a lot of #socialcoop people are talking about credit unions: what are the benefits of a credit union, aside from ideological consistency?

I'm currently with a traditional bank for no real reason other than "because." I've often thought about moving to a local credit union, but have yet to make the leap -- mostly due to inertia.

@ink_slinger Basically, it's a #consumercoop owned by its depositors, who democratically elect the board of directors on a 1 member 1 vote basis. In many #creditunions that's a formality, but the good ones have pretty robust democracy and commitment to supporting the broader #coop economy. #VanCity in Vancouver is one of the most progressive, and, where I live, #VSECU does a great job - they recently created a #CoopCapital program to make equity investments in other #coops.
@ink_slinger I'm in a specialized one for teachers, which offers useful benefits, like low interest loans for supplies. Also they save a portion of every paycheck and give it to me over summer break. Super useful. Plus the branch has good coffee and snacks.
@noflag That's very cool. I don't know there were credit unions that are that specialized!
