Until a few years ago in Poland there used to be a local bus line 666 to Hel, but the number was changed after Catholics complained 🙄

Now Flixbus opened a line 666 from Kraków to Hel, so it's finally back ;3

@rail highway to hel :D
@rail Does it go on a Highway to Hel?
@rail is there a highway on the route?
@rail this 97-year old religious fanatic cult still serves moral panic the old-fashioned way
@rail does it play AC/DC's Highway to Hell during the trip?
@rail FUCK YEAHHH >:3
@rail They could also bring back AY666 from CPH to HEL if they started an airline: https://yle.fi/a/3-9883118
Finnish flag carrier Finnair retires apocalyptic Friday 13th Flight 666 to HEL

Superstitious folk will no doubt breathe a sigh of relief as national airline Finnair announced the retirement of its infamous Friday 13th flight, AY 666 to HEL. The flight, which originates in Copenhagen and lands in Helsinki, touched down for the last time on Friday. However passengers can still fly from SIN to HEL.

@[email protected] maybe you know this already but hell and all those similar words mean 'north sea'
@brettm @rail it's Hel, not hell, so absolutely not here
Wikipedia says it's from a Germanic word meaning 'a hill next to sea' or 'an elevated place, exposed to winds', depending on dialect
@[email protected] @[email protected] hel hell hul hull all refered originally to north sea afaik!
@brettm @Lili @rail For some the north sea is hell
@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] yes its been a fair while since i've been reading up on any linguistics but i think that's part of the reason when the bible got translated from greek -> latin -> english they used the word 'hell' cause it was pretty hellish to cross, and the etymology of the word also has meanings like hidden, sinister (people were 'hidden' after getting swallowed up by the sea, washed overboard or boat sank).

fun fact 'holland' is descended from the same word too.
@brettm @Lili I don't think so. The Germanic words are thought to go back to a verb meaning 'to conceal', hell/hél/Hölle etc. being a place that is hidden from mortal sight. I don't know where you got that Northsea thing from
@brettm @Lili @rail makes sense, I thought it referred to the goddess and/or helheim
@rail The sound equipment is set to Behemoth only, I hope.

@rail what about a metal festival in Hel, called "Hel Fest", so that metal fans can travel with line 666.

I think there's is quite some potential in this idea.

@rail Flixbus, the journey to Hel is already hell 👍️

This reminds me to an occasion a few years ago when we wanted to go by ferry from Gdánsk to Hel and I went to the ticket office saying: "Two tickets to Hel, please."

@el_ulri @rail A friend of mine in the US was able to buy a one way ticket (bus) to Paradise, though the ticket seller had clearly had that request a *few* times before...

(The ticket was from Virginville via Intercourse, though a bad turn would have had them in Blue Ball...)

(MOAR EDITZ: it's only a few minutes from Intercourse to Paradise it seems: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yESBVlvuE_s )

@DamonHD @el_ulri @rail similarly my grandad, when he was stationed in Norway in WWII bought himself a one-way ticket to Hell
@rail now you can all go to Hel
@rail not even a direct route, probably makes multiple stops
@c0dec0dec0de @rail isn't that always the case, though? The road to Hel is paved with good intentions...
@UkeleleEric @rail in my experience, those don’t wear well.
@gaetan @rail mdrrrrr j'avais vu, askip à l'époque là bas il y avait aussi une ligne urbaine numéro 666
@rail 666, The Number Of The Bus
@rail Well, that is the right way to go to Hel..... — Vi
@rail I'm on the highway to Hel !
@rail I VOLUNTEER AS DRIVER

@rail That's so weird to me. I was raised Catholic and "666" was strictly some pop culture horror movie bullshit.

I once worked somewhere they directed me to skip making files in alphanumeric when they contained "666" and I laughed my ass off until the person, with no smile at all, let me know they were very serious about it.

They were evangelical Protestant.

@rail Slightly off the topic, the original number of the beast was 616, not 666. For some vague reason it was later changed to 666 in the Book of Revelation. A good example of how they ensure the accuracy of their "holy" scriptures.
@adam_wysokinski @rail it's even more complex than that. Many of the numerical & symbolic references in the 'Apocalyptic' books are obscure, not helped by translation. It's just a certain branch of (mainly American) protestant evangelical churches have tried to pin everything down to a particular meaning, without actually looking at the point of the story in its broad sweep. In Hebrew, &, to an extent, NT Greek, things CAN mean more than one thing at the same time without it being contradictory.
@rail So a return ticket allows you to go to Hel and back.
@rail We gotta send a petition to AtB in Norway to change the number of line 430.

@rail Nice, greetings to Hel and whole Helheim. Hope she's still having enough houses available when my time has come. 🙃
@rail
It's 666 or 616, because there were two numerology ways to spell Nero.
@rail You know someone at Flixbus did it on purpose.

@rail

Scared of a string of digits, eh?

@rail And there are already ppl pissed off about it lmao
