Hermen Overkleeft wordt wereldwijd beschouwd als een van de grondleggers van de chemische biologie. Dit vakgebied ontwerpt moleculen om biologische processen te doorgronden. De hoogleraar bio-organische chemie aan de Universiteit Leiden ontwikkelde innovatieve methodes om menselijke eiwitten effectief en zonder nadelige gevolgen te kunnen beïnvloeden. Hiermee heeft hij niet alleen de kennis over metabole processen in het lichaam verrijkt, maar ook de ontwikkeling van nieuwe geneesmiddelen mogelijk gemaakt. Voor deze uitzonderlijke prestaties ontvangt Overkleeft de Spinozapremie.
