This nightmare for every book author.

Agency stole bestselling author's book, used AI to relaunch as their own https://waxy.org/2026/06/the-wholesale-plagiarism-of-obscure-sorrows/

The Wholesale Plagiarism of Obscure Sorrows - Waxy.org

Without permission, a marketing agency republished the entirety of John Koenig's Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows book, replacing its art with AI slop and adding new AI words. Their unauthorized site now ranks higher than the real one everywhere.

Waxy.org
@nixCraft Incidentally, John Koenig's actual book sounds good.

@foolishowl @nixCraft It is unbelievably good. Goto his site and look at the vids he did for a lot of the words.

The work is truly humbling.

@R_3_T_3_C_H @foolishowl @nixCraft Or if you're able to, buy the actual book.

@starluna @foolishowl @nixCraft That too. But he made the vids as a means to access the grace of the work.

When first published I bought 11 copies for friends (two for me, one as a backup) and sent them out in unmarked boxes. Each person knew it was me immediately. The work is truly powerful.

@R_3_T_3_C_H @foolishowl @nixCraft 💯agree. I keep the book next to my desk to peruse when I need a moment.
@nixCraft if nobody had belittled or hated our copyright, we wouldn't've been gonna suffer from incoming food crisis (i know it ain't caused only due to ai, but still) 😞

@nixCraft omg. That is a brilliant, creative, unique work. My mom lost my only copy.

@nixCraft got gifted a book recently “The Book of Coffee - A philosophy”. 40 pages in I was aware that nothing had really been said. Noticed lots of AI tropes. Checked publish date “2026”. Definitely an AI slop book.

Unfortunately I think this will now be common place.

@briandouglas @nixCraft I wonder if the publishing industry is ready for the “published in 2026” stigma that will give book buyers pause. I bet it doesn’t take more than one unfortunate experience with slop to steer buyers away from new releases.

@briandouglas Especially #Amazon is full of fake #AISlop books ... and they do nothing for the real authors. These fight in vain.

@nixCraft

@nixCraft How incredibly stupid. The entire book is brand new, completely original, copyrighted words. He began publishing them over a decade ago with a special art grant to produce very poignant original vids for each word.

Hell, OED picked up Sonder years ago. It's now in all major dictionaries.

This might be the purest example of vemödalen I've ever seen.

@nixCraft
The sad part is that who will want to write a book anymore? Who will want to publish tutorials?

Why?...when AI just sucks them up...and even worse, when it butchers them.

@nixCraft @RandomCanuck as a creative person, my feeling is: this is just vile.

@nixCraft I’m a bit confused why the author hasn’t sued the agency by now, or at least had a lawyer send them a threatening note, it would be an easy case to win

@kevinr Unfortunately, it's not at all easy, if you haven't at least a very big publisher or a writer's union doing it for you.
And if it's the case, he probably doesn't talk about it before a lawsuit is successful.

@nixCraft

@kevinr @nixCraft the article says the publisher tried twice to get the page taken down, unsuccessfully!

@nixCraft Like the article states: "but it isn’t an isolated case."
It's a great research of only one example. Unfortunately, publishing houses/their authors loose thousands of dollars by fake-sites and fake books. Such companies even sell fake biographies when a well-known author launches a book. Meanwhile, they fake even voices, videos. Smaller publishing houses often give up ...
What we need are big publishers

@nixCraft and writer's unions initiating a lawsuit because as an author alone you nearly have no choice.

Marketing people, eh?
Sheesh.
