@solderandchaos But that’s not quite true, is it?
Computers may have had a better perceived experience when the *barrier to entry was higher*, but they are far more capable today.
Nobody is forcing us to use computers the way everyone else thinks they ought to be used. If someone else’s vision for your machine sucks, draft a new vision!
@austinross computers were better for us when they were worse, maybe?
It forced us to find optimisations, it had technically a lower barrier despite what you say, because everyone could craft their own website, we got magazines and books where we could type out our own games and then customise or adapt them… for me growing up in the 80’s it was a golden age of exploration and discovery.

Objective Truth

@lucydev why yes! My mastodon maintainer decided to make them for a bit of fun and it seems to have escalated somewhat.
Does anyone else miss Tripod and Geocities? Those old free webhosts were awesome. If you wanted a "web presence" you had to learn html & css to do it yourself. The good old days. Excuse me, I dropped my cane.
True. When you set IRQs with a physical jumper, you carried a complete map of your machine in your head — every interrupt accounted for by hand. SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 wasn’t config, it was muscle memory. Then “Plug and Pray” abstracted it all away and called the confusion progress.
I need this shirt. It is so true.
