Today’s sartorial elegance:

(for yes you can get one too, please support my mastodon moderator etc: https://sellshirts.com/product/11902 )

Ahem @Floppy please can you do a 409?
@solderandchaos I like that very much.
@solderandchaos I learned a new word today! [sartorial]

(also, real)
@solderandchaos time to boost this one 😊

@solderandchaos But that’s not quite true, is it?

Computers may have had a better perceived experience when the *barrier to entry was higher*, but they are far more capable today.

Nobody is forcing us to use computers the way everyone else thinks they ought to be used. If someone else’s vision for your machine sucks, draft a new vision!

@austinross computers were better for us when they were worse, maybe?

It forced us to find optimisations, it had technically a lower barrier despite what you say, because everyone could craft their own website, we got magazines and books where we could type out our own games and then customise or adapt them… for me growing up in the 80’s it was a golden age of exploration and discovery.

@solderandchaos definite bloat, optimizing code was important back in the day but with addons to ide's programs have so much bloat now.
@solderandchaos we should never have added any bits after 16 for cpu and even the extra 8 from 8bit was a bit of a mistake
@solderandchaos OMG!!! I need one too
@solderandchaos
I'm a curmudgeonly shell user.
Don't make for me a gui. make me a cli.
Back in the day interfaces were fixed
and documented. Today guis change on
a whim for no reasonable reason.
@solderandchaos ooh this is perfect for a #ReadySingerOne gig 😁
(my pins should explain..!)
@noodlemaz oh that does sound delightful! Don’t suppose you’re going to EMF?
@solderandchaos I'm not (and the whole choir isn't) but at least one fellow chorister is!
@solderandchaos Can we go back to this please!
@TheVampireFishQueen @solderandchaos My desk has two big beige steel boxes underneath it, a CRT on top, and - well, a still older IBM Model M keyboard. Check. Floppy drive still works, too.
@solderandchaos is there perhaps...a place where i can get myself one of these?

@lucydev why yes! My mastodon maintainer decided to make them for a bit of fun and it seems to have escalated somewhat.

@solderandchaos not really. The problem aren't computers. The problem is people using computers.

@solderandchaos

Does anyone else miss Tripod and Geocities? Those old free webhosts were awesome. If you wanted a "web presence" you had to learn html & css to do it yourself. The good old days. Excuse me, I dropped my cane.

@solderandchaos

True. When you set IRQs with a physical jumper, you carried a complete map of your machine in your head — every interrupt accounted for by hand. SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 wasn’t config, it was muscle memory. Then “Plug and Pray” abstracted it all away and called the confusion progress.

@solderandchaos
I think there's merit to Agent Smith's statement that 1999 was the peak of human civilization. After that we had 9/11, endless wars in the Middle East, mass surveillance and censorship, multiple pandemics, the Tea Party and MAGA movements, the take-over of our governments by Evangelicals and sometimes just straight-up fascists, the enshittification of the Internet, mass unemployment due to AI, and an unprecedented movement of wealth from the common people to the oligarchs.

@solderandchaos

I need this shirt. It is so true.

@solderandchaos Back when most software *wasn't* a web app, yes.
