“And now, inevitably, half of my #Bluesky timeline is like: oh, we need a service that’s resistant to this sort of shit, something that’s not beholden to capitalist pressure, something that’s queer-friendly…, quickly followed by but don’t say #Mastodon!
Sorry, I’m saying it. We want fucking Mastodon. It’s run by an actual non-profit foundation, none of this “public benefit corporation” bullshit. It’s not subject to creeping network-wide puritanism. Mastodon. Goddammit.”

Look, just fucking use Mastodon already

A short, unnecessarily profane rant about modern social media, not really serious but not really a joke, either. With apologies to McSweeney’s.

I love this post every time I read it! The part you quoted, It baffles me every time. They esentially say they want everything the Fediverse has in one project or another, Go to Social, etc. And then follow it up with but don't say the Fediverse! We want something different! Well, clearly, you don't. Just own up to it! Just say, yes I like walled gardons and centralized platforms. @josemurilo
@josemurilo yeah but but but it’s sooooooo hard to use
@jarno @josemurilo it’s not hard, just a PITA.
@josemurilo Fucking thank you! It's staring these assholes in the face and they will. not. drink.

@josemurilo I genuinely, genuinely, do not understand the "but not Mastodon" people.

It's an open standard. It is what you make it.

If you "don't like Mastodon," the problem is YOU, not Mastodon.

@josemurilo Having been there for the great migration, I think it's this kind of attitude was one of the things that made people have a bad time migrating.

I think telling people what is good for them is a good way to get them to develop the attitude of "get out of my room, DAD!" And resistant to what you are telling them.

It's one thing to be inviting and helpful to the curious. It's another to shame people for "laziness" and not making "good" decisions.

@Scofisticated @josemurilo "I think telling people what is good for them is a good way to get them to develop the attitude of "get out of my room, DAD!" And resistant to what you are telling them."

So they're teenagers?

@kevin

Inside everyone are three wolves; one of whom is a teenager wolf who's life is SOO unfair.

@Scofisticated @josemurilo

I think it is great that we have what AP, the Fedi, and Mastodon are. But it still needs improvement.

It works for us. But no one thing is a good fit for everyone.

And that being upset that someone doesnt make the decision you think is the right one is disrespectful to their agency.

I'm saying you have treated them like a teenager. So they are treating you like an overbearing parent. And given a +1 reason not to consider the Fedi by making us look like snobs.

@doctormo @kevin @josemurilo

@kevin Everyone on the internet is a teenager.
@Scofisticated @josemurilo
@josemurilo I stopped Blusky after I was labeled as a bot.
@josemurilo that felt cathartic to read and I wholeheartedly agree.
@josemurilo I have Bluesky but I don't feel I'm allowed to say anything on there. It's more like feeds from all the news services, not a discussion.
@josemurilo I hope more people use Mastodon, I really like the idea of it. But I frequently get upset with the user experience. For example, when I tap on a link within the app to a post on a different server, it takes me into a web view. And I can’t just like it. I have to sign in again?? Fixing these little UX shortcomings is essential so more non-tech people can adapt it.
@frederik @josemurilo I don't even know what any of this means. Mastodon is too complicated. The masses need to stay on Facebook or whatever, where they can spend their time yelling at each other in a way which is also beyond my comprehension.

@frederik @josemurilo Some clients don't have this issue. Megalodon would search any link you clicked to see if it was a post or not before forwarding it to the system link handler to open a web browser, but Megalodon is discontinued. FediLab seems to have a hard coded list of what is a server & what isn't, which is really annoying & terrible but does work sometimes. Moshidon is probably like Megalodon, except Moshidon is maintained & still actively developed. For clicking fediverse server links outside of a fediverse client I use this app, which automatically opens them with your selected fediverse client.

This is all on mobile. For desktop I don't know what to do. Maybe Tokodon can do this.

Here in the Fediverse we also “don’t say Mastodon”. Let me illustrate it with two quotes verbatim from one thread, that present the community sentiment in high latitude:

don’t let the state, the rich, or powerful into the open, interoperable social web at all. not into the fediverse (what they love reducing to just “mastodon”), not into atproto, and not into anywhere else

also mastodon is just the lamest fediware out there. still no emoji reactions (which are a standard feature in most other places) arbitrarily low character limits and restrictions on file uploads and the loose “ai” “policy” and that constant rush to placate corpotechbros of course

There’s people out there on Akkomas, GoToSocials, Snacs, Iceshrimp.NETs, Wafrns, and whatnot. Some people even run their instances, I think it was snac, on microcontroller boards that take a fraction of a watt!

Btw here’s an example of a fediverse client dev being annoyed at some specific case of Mastodon not caring about being okay towards aligning with other fedi implementations https://pl.fediverse.pl/objects/08f7940a-9568-40be-b9cc-141aee841918

The issues with Mastodon sometimes are even instances of Winmail.dat syndrome — it’s like Outlook https://www.ploum.net/winmail-dat-syndrome/index.html

rant re: mastodon 4.6, pfp alt text

@mi @josemurilo activitypub is literally a w3c recommendation, letting the state/the rich in was literally a design choice. and atproto is just a billionaires' toy lol
App View is basically a naked data mining vehicle by design. I'm sure some user/dev there sincerely don't want it to be used for surveillance but it's like resisting gravity.

I think it was snac, on microcontroller boards that take a fraction of a watt!
Ohh... that sounds fun! I'd love to read up on that. Do you have a source?

#snac <3
Welcome to esp32fedi.cjdgrevival.com

I had no idea, lmao
pawsome job! :3

I have mostly got rid of the ESP32 running the server because it kept breaking at that time so instead i have moved it to a ARM64 phone but it still kept the power efficiency (it only draws a few watts)
@mi @me the taiko-web cjdgrevival dot com has a fedi instance? waow internet lore
@josemurilo "it supports federation the way a rope supports a hanged man" 😂
RE: Look, just fucking use Mastodon already - leafy

my rant on people that glaze fedi and want every living human on earth to use it

@josemurilo I think I just should spin up a Mastodon instance, apply a theme that has more kind of the looks of a VC-backed platform, make it invite only, charge 2.99 per month and tell everyone it's the next hot shit, while underneath, just be a regular part of the Fediverse.
@eliasp You just described threads
@josemurilo

@prism if Threads was a "good citizen" of the Fediverse…

I think they disable Federation for a lot of stuff still by default etc.

@josemurilo

@eliasp @josemurilo and you can even do a pseudo rug pull à la Forkiverse :) (beh, no wikipedia page...).

@josemurilo +9001%

It reminds me of the Bufoons that constantly complain about #Wondows doing #Enshittification but refuse to even try any #Linux distro.

- And I'm so sick of these people that I refuse to provide any IT support to those with the exception of migrating to Linux, because anythibg else is harming my mental health and incentivizing self-destructive behaviour.

@josemurilo I vastly appreciate the number of 'fuckings' in this post. Thanks, @arilin !

@josemurilo

"Have you chosen an email provider, fuckers? Yes? Congratulations! You can pick an instance"

Unfortunately, by an enormous margin, almost everyone is either on google mail or iCloud mail. I don't think a lot of people even know these days you can get other ones. I don't think people pick this, it's just "whatever came with my phone".

@boggo @josemurilo People use the email provider they have because of vendor lock in. Google, Apple, & Microsoft block a ton of smaller servers to force people to make accounts with them in order to send mail to people who use their servers, & abstract away everything so no one learns how to actually use email & gets stuck with them.
@josemurilo quit calling it mastodon it's not the only fedi software
@josemurilo Posted this on Bluesky. I‘d wish the 5 people I have a Bluesky account for would finally realise they need to come here.

@josemurilo

Bsky ppl want “Twitter 2 that is also does everything I want at any time” and they will never change.

@josemurilo I would go further, and say we just need #Fedi.
Mastodon is great, but the Fediverse is so much more.
Mastodon is just the gateway to a whole new universe.

And I'm sure my BS timeline would be like that, if I hadn't junked my account.
Hell, I happen to know FB is like that, and has been for years.

@josemurilo

Good post, though imo other fedi apps are better than mastodon because mastodon doesn’t support posting formatted text. It’s 2026, every text format should at least support inline links, italics, and bold.

Also, if you don’t want to lose your posts, move to Wafrn and you can migrate your bluesky posts and followers to your wafrn-integrated Bluesky account.

#fedi-meta-discussion #wafrn-propaganda

@josemurilo
But I heard this one time a buncha trans furry GENDERTERRORISTS bullied Will Weadon for NO REASON*!!!!

*Provided you only listen to Westly Crusher bellyaching after trying to turn fedi into his thing and you don't read any of their clearly stated reasons.

@josemurilo I don't get why social media users have so much aversion to Mastodon. I understand it's expensive for hosting instances and there might be other troubles. But for people who just want to post on social media, there is a real disdain for Mastodon.

And it's probably the fact you have to work a bit to get people to see your posts, and you can post something that gets zero response. There are the attention-hungry types who just can't bear to feel mildly ignored but no matter how much you list the benefits of decentralised social media, people either don't want to listen or seem to want Fedi to fail (which it isn't).

I don't really get it.

@lydiaconwell

Mostly it isn't anything about the actual network, or it's software, or users, because these are mostly users who haven't even tried it so can't know about that.

It must be based on reputation alone, because that's all the dismissive person has to go on, having never tried it.

The reputation here is that it's got loads of busybodies who tell you off for failure to content-warn or alt-text or pick the right instance and its full of reply-guys and maybe racists and is its got the stink of nerds all over it and only uncool geeks go there not all the top cool influencers and best brands.

The reputation is not entirely undeserved.

@josemurilo

@pre I messaged Media Lens to see if they would set up an account on Fedi and they told me that their tech guy warned of security risks with Mastodon -- which I don't understand. You're posting publicly some words and links. What are the security risks? Are these risks better or worse than publicly posting on Twitter?

They also mentioned that Caitlin Johnstone's account was suspended on Mastodon. First, her suspension was probably deserved, and second neither Media Lens nor Caitlin Johnstone understood that her account was suspended from mastodon.social, not *all* of Mastodon.

You recommend fedi and all you get is boo hoo it's a bit something else, and yeah, none of my cool friends are on it so I won't bother.

Maybe it's hesitancy, like vaccine hesitancy. People will do it if they know someone else has done it.

@lydiaconwell You ask people to do the work of figuring out Mastodon and they look for reasons not to have to do that work I guess.

If you run your own Mastodon instance then you have to do security updates. Maybe they're thinking that? Most media orgs probably ought to run their own for Media Lens are too small for that really.

Johnstone was indeed banned, and she got quite indignant and that did puts lots of people off I guess. Not knowing that the whole point is you can just register somewhere less intolerant of your particular rant tendencies.

If there were a hundred times more users already here, then yeah, they'd find ways to do the work instead of ways to avoid it.

@lydiaconwell @josemurilo Literally every conversation I've ever had on this topic

Me: you should join Mastodon. It's like twitter, but better.

Them: I do like the sound of better twitter. Where do I sign up?

Me: Uuum, well, that depends on your instance, see, it depends on your interests, there's a huge list of...

Them: zzz

@prism @lydiaconwell @josemurilo That's why I don't do that. I suggest an instance and that is that.
@fireborn But I dont' know which one would be best! I shouldn't make that decision for them. Inevitably it won't meet their needs and then they'll leave anyway :(
@lydiaconwell @josemurilo
@prism @lydiaconwell @josemurilo The only way they realise it doesn't meet their needs is with exposure to other instances.

@fireborn I probably could have saved myself a lot of headache if I just directed folks to masto dot social.

*braces for the flood of reply guys telling me that this is bad actually, boooo centralization, etc.*

@lydiaconwell @josemurilo

@prism @lydiaconwell @josemurilo usually the people I'm recommending to are people I know at least least a bit about, so I point them to an instance with a focus on something they like.
@fireborn I tried that, unfortunately most of my friends are stoners and weed.life shut down (which is so perfectly on-the-nose)
@lydiaconwell @josemurilo
@prism @lydiaconwell @josemurilo Fair. I also tend to recommend this one, because I'm a mod on it and can generate invites and have a good idea of the content people will see.
