All of this nonsense about getting kids off social media is really just a cover for not legislating the social media companies to make the spaces safe for everyone.

They of course, don't want that as it would affect profits.

Explain again how profits are more important to a society than safe spaces?

@WTL I think it's a logical move given that social media is designed to be addictive and that we already ban other addictive things to minors. This said I'm very much against the govt telling people what they shouldn't be doing.

@WTL To me, It feels more like our law makers have just giving up. They don't understand social media or how it works with all it's technical mumbo jumbo. So they turned to more "simple stuff", that they know how to regulate. And somehow that makes me even more sad, than the usual "they're corrupt and evil!"

Safe spaces exist. We're in one of them right now.

At the moment, X and TikTok and whatnot have no power over any of us except the power we individually choose to give them. Power that we individually can revoke at any time.

So if these people are so damn concerned about the platforms they're using, why aren't they seeking alternatives? Why aren't they moving themselves and their kids to safe spaces like this one on their own? I did. You did. What's their excuse?

@WTL It's even worse than that. Meta actually willingly takes a cut of fraudulent ad revenue on their platform. This doesn't seem to really bother anybody.

@WTL Be careful what you ask for. Right wing governments would define a space that is "safe for everyone" as one where nothing that they don't approve of exists online, or where the only things allowed on the net are things they think children should be able to see.

The backlash from Trump for actually effective controls on Twitter etc is probably also on their minds.

When I was a kid there were rules and laws in place to protect us. Television, books, to be honest all forms of media had to comply. Why is this not the case anymore? Or doesnt apply to social media?
