Controversial opinion:

The point at which a video game should be remade/remastered is when the original user experience finally makes the game inaccessible to modern players.

Every 3D Zelda game before BotW has terrible UX and it's fine to redo them with modern controls and inventory management.

Also: we don't need a Skyrim remaster, but man I can't wait for one of the fifteen Morrowind remake projects to finish because it was one of my favorite games and it's completely unplayable in 2026.

@tess I've been of this opinion since fighting against the cumbersome controls of SimAnt 20+ years ago

@oblomov @tess

That whole early generation of Windows games where they thought using Windows UI elements was a good idea....

@tess Morrowind's still fine though? (IMO) - I played it when it came out on a laptop and I'm still playing it now on a laptop, same controls, why would it be unplayable all of a sudden?
@elduvelle @tess I can’t imagine playing it in the original engine rather than OpenMW: proper NPC navigation without fixed navigation grids, saves organized by characters, item search, tab completion in the console, etc.
But many Morrowind mechanics I think are in fact features rather than bugs indeed.
@tess My wife wouldn't play a Skyrim remaster. She likes it as is with all the goofy bugs and stuff. It's part of the charm.
@tess so, Nightdive’s remake of the original System Shock: good
The System Shock 2 remaster: did we really need it?
@tess the scale of these is also very different. The remake of 1 is very different technologically and plays much more smoothly; the remaster of 2 feels like just taking some of the mods and bundling them in.
@tess openmw fixes pretty much all of the technical issues and adds things like distant land and widescreen support.
@tess Fallout New Vegas! All of humanity needs that.
@tess for all of morrowind's strengths, *even at the time* its flaws were glaring. I'm pretty tolerant (eg I still play several 90s strategy games) but yeah there's nothing about morrowind that *requires* those menus etc for the good parts to shine
@tess This is controversial?

@tess this must be why the Resident Evil (1) remaster didn't do it for me. Still handles like a tractor, Just couldn't play it.

Resident Evil 2 remake though... Lovely stuff.

@tess also everytime a Game is unplayable due to targeting EoL'd systems, APIs and consoles with no means to procure new licensed copies…

  • At least a licensed way to obtaining Emulator-ROMs should be the norm!

@tess So many people say that about Morrowind. I've tried two or three times to get into it, and the age and general graphical jankiness has been a big barrier. I would love to play a modernized version.

I'm replaying Skyrim right now. I don't find its bugs endearing, it just pisses me off that Bethesda leaves so many games full of land mines for completionist players to navigate.

@marcfranz8 I put easily 200 hours into that game and I'm not sure I could play it now due to the jank.
@tess just fewer cliff racers, please
@adam cliff racers are the *good* kind of friction, I say keep 'em
@tess I fully agree.
Similar reason why I'm glad for the Starfox remake: the original hardware has become inaccessible/unavailable.
