Each time I hear US politicians claiming the UK is being 'swamped' by a flood of immigrants, I am wryly amused that they have no idea about (or refuse think about) how the USA was founded.... by a swamping of immigrants who destroyed the native (indigenous) population - immigrants driven by religious persecution & often seeking to better their family's economic circumstances.

Still why would US politicians be concerned with their country's own history?

#USPol #politics #migration

@ChrisMayLA6 have you noticed how many (white) Americans are so very proud of their (white European) ancestry?

It's almost like it's not about immigration at all. I can't quite think what it might be about, though 🤔

@ChrisMayLA6

History is a tool; they wield it clumsily.

Rich assholes here in the US have always relied on immigrant labor when they couldn't find enough cheap indigenous labor. I assume the current anti-immigration tilt comes from rich assholes who have enough labor at hand but want to make the locals afraid.

'Twas ever thus.

@grumble209 @ChrisMayLA6

That’s the thing: facing an upcoming once-in-generation labor shortage, and the prospect of having to increase wages, after 2 generations of successfully suppressing them, lauding tools that will disempower labor even more, the most capital-efficient solution would be to admit more people from around the world.

@paninid @ChrisMayLA6

The whole point of being a "rich asshole" is to push any costs - especially "once in a generation" costs - onto someone else. Those sound expensive.

Trump can sponsor and marry a foreign worker and still bellow about immigrants talking US jobs. Cognitive dissonance requires cognition. His racist supporters cheer and his rich asshole friends don't pay attention to the buffoonery as long as they don't have to get out their checkbooks.

@ChrisMayLA6

US politicians don't even care about the "school shootings" that happen across the USofA...

@ChrisMayLA6 They mean "brown" immigrants. Besides, white people aren't immigrants, they're "expats".

@NickSchwanck

An astute observation, now that you mention it.

@ChrisMayLA6

@ChrisMayLA6

It explains why they fear immigrants... They think they'll receive the same treatment!

@ChrisMayLA6

Intelligence has limits, stupidity however…

@ChrisMayLA6 I think politicians are way beyond putting effort into communicating a coherent worldview. They know most voters don’t, so why should they? It’s not like all voters are inherently unwilling to try, it’s just that the information they see is just so enshittified. That means no accountability, which turns politics into pure theatre.

@ChrisMayLA6

Maybe they’re worried that the immigrants will treat them the way they treated Native Americans.

@svavar @ChrisMayLA6 yes, this. More than worried, they assume it because that's the only way of thinking they can imagine.

@ChrisMayLA6

Oh, it's worse than that: US politicians are REWRITING the history, to sanitize it of the parts they do not wish to acknowledge.

The Bunker Hill Monument in Boston, for example, is having all "woke" elements forcibly removed, such as an acknowledgement of slavery, Native Americans, or immigrants.

NPS orders removal of 'woke' quotes from Bunker Hill Monument

Federal officials termed the removals of the three quotes “a routine exhibit refresh.”

The Boston Globe
@weekend_editor This is not the country I was promised.

@ChrisMayLA6 There's a reset timing, after which people forget about the past. Additionally, they are easily fooled to think that any history fact is made up.
Everything in their past was shiny glorious, if anything is wrong in their present time is due to someone else, outside of their idyllic memories.

There are signs here of a few classical psychosies, extended epidemically.

@ChrisMayLA6 it has nothing to do with immigration

it is about what color the immigrants are

@ChrisMayLA6 The English pilgrims on the Mayflower already had religious freedom as they had been living in Leiden in Holland where they could do what they liked.

However, they disliked the permissiveness of Dutch society especially around children. The Pilgrims thought that children should be punished. They were also poor so left Leiden essentially as economic migrants.

Yes, they wanted religious freedom but that was not the main driver as they had that already. It was economics.....

@ChrisMayLA6
They don't bother about the past or logic.
They are simple minds.
They put words together, they believe support things they want to do.

If we spiral about understanding that, we are blocked and doozed - and they win!

As soon as we stop trying to imply reason to their 'content' it all makes 'sense'.

But even then, I am still lost about, what's next

@Justbeep

If we stop trying to hold them to the measure of reason & truth, then we really are lost

@ChrisMayLA6

Hard to know where to begin with this one. Offensive, racist, hypocritical, historically illiterate, diplomatically inappropriate, ironic..... Yes, let's start at offensive.

Migration is part of the human condition. It's literally in our DNA. Immigration makes our societies stronger, better, more vibrant.

We need to push back hard at the anti-immigrant rhetoric that is ascendant. And it beggars belief that this comes from people who are themselves immigrants, or the descendants of immigrants, in nations built by immigrants.

@alantperry

Exactly; completely agree

@ChrisMayLA6

Must remember to pop in to a pub for a pint and a curry next time I'm in Londinium. 😉

@ChrisMayLA6 These same #US #politicians would be steamingly angry if any of OUR politicians dared to comment on matters of US #politics, calling it violating US #national #sovereignty. They can say what they like about our #migration #policy & #policing, though, & are supposedly immune from all criticism.

@rmblaber1956

The political class (across the world) are specialists in hypocrisy - its in their DNA (if they have such a thing)

@ChrisMayLA6 They know exactly how the USA came into being, and that is why they are afraid.
Lega Nord here in Italy once made anti immigration propaganda posters featuring a Native American, noting how they ended up in reservations because of immigration.
They know.
@ChrisMayLA6
I think they are well aware the US was formed by immigrants destrying the local populace and culture. That's why they are so affraid of immigration.
