Each time I hear US politicians claiming the UK is being 'swamped' by a flood of immigrants, I am wryly amused that they have no idea about (or refuse think about) how the USA was founded.... by a swamping of immigrants who destroyed the native (indigenous) population - immigrants driven by religious persecution & often seeking to better their family's economic circumstances.
Still why would US politicians be concerned with their country's own history?
Hard to know where to begin with this one. Offensive, racist, hypocritical, historically illiterate, diplomatically inappropriate, ironic..... Yes, let's start at offensive.
Migration is part of the human condition. It's literally in our DNA. Immigration makes our societies stronger, better, more vibrant.
We need to push back hard at the anti-immigrant rhetoric that is ascendant. And it beggars belief that this comes from people who are themselves immigrants, or the descendants of immigrants, in nations built by immigrants.
