So, this is inside baseball, Dallas version. Once upon a time, #Dallas was an art town. There was large scale public support for things like murals and sculpture and things in public spaces.

In 1992, and for 14 more years, bunches of local artists were invited to come paint areas that were graffiti magnets. And thus was the Good Latimer Deep Ellum Arts project born. (Disclaimer, I had a 10’x12’ mural under the bridge before it was demolished).

One of the artists who really threw himself in was muralist Robert #Wyland, who painted Whaling Wall 82 at the Aquarium. Truly one of the most amazing pieces of public art in Dallas.

They painted over it for FIFA. It has become a tradition for capitalists to destroy the commons in Dallas.

If there’s one thing the new breed of Capital cannot abide, it’s proof that we continue apace without their approval.

They are afraid of #art. Good. Have paint, will travel.

@MissConstrue Fuck FIFA.
@ZenHeathen @MissConstrue I mean yeah, fuck FIFA but, I seriously doubt this was requested by them. Fuck Dallas City Council for letting it happen.
@FeloniousPunk @ZenHeathen This was such a clusterfuck, nobody is taking responsibility, but yes at its core, Dallas leadership fell down.
@MissConstrue I'm sure the same space will be covered by paid advertising. It makes me sick.
@MissConstrue Pure crap. Do you have a photo of your piece?
@Elleaster I’m sure I do somewhere, but it was well before digital photography, so I’ll have to find the film roll.
@MissConstrue I wondered if I remembered it from those days, they were very hazy days.
@MissConstrue thank you for sharing the beautiful work… honestly.
@MissConstrue These kinds of people are not happy until every surface is dull and colourless, and then covered with advertisements.
@MissConstrue this is horrific... I'm so sorry for that city's loss
@MissConstrue May the FIFA stuff get graffitied on mercilessly.
@courtcan Dallas natives are openly hostile about the World Cup. Not towards the fans or teams, but towards FIFA. Edit to add: Having seen some of the budget, I'm sooo glad my county said "Erm, naw, we're good. We want none of that." Also, there's no real hotels out here anyway. Seriously. The first hotel where I am got built after the tornado in 2016, and everybody realized all the workers had to sleep somewhere if we wanted to rebuild.
@MissConstrue I'm sure it'll be covered with corporate graffiti (advertisements) in no time at all. Fuckem.
@MissConstrue I remember Wyland's murals in the 80s -- he did an enormous, beautiful one in Philly! A travesty that they destroyed it.
@PamelaBarroway And to add insult to injury, after they’ve destroyed a metric ton of local street art, they’re bringing in artists from outside to paint over where local street art was. I mean, nothing against international artists, but Dallas has some of the finest street artists right freaking here, and they painted over it.
@MissConstrue … turning Dallas into Dull-as

Wyland Foundation
@MissConstrue Isn’t there intrinsic moral right to keep the mural? I don’t know what sort of paperwork was signed back then, but this is akin to art theft.
@forever_archives it’s my understanding that lawsuits have been filed, but the art has been destroyed, so…
@MissConstrue I hope they take the settlement money and pay a muralist to make something new and beautiful.
@forever_archives I think Wyland is still alive, and if he's up to it, I'd love to have it pay for a new Wyland.
