I can make my own clothing without a pattern

ah, just came to mind, i forgor ironing clothing
the reader can iron clothing
(i need to add another option, go wild)
Poll ends at .
@4censord I can make clothes without a pattern but they'll look like it. Maybe that's the definition of "going wild"?
@4censord My wife can do all of the above, I only can wear clothes and probably ironing.
@4censord Aren't you curious how many can do none of the above? I don't know, maybe not what you were looking for but I am going wild here.
@snoopy_jay yes I am curious about that, but i forgot to add it initially and also when doing the followup
And editing the poll resets all votes
@4censord I make my own jam.
@PaulineM Cool!
i should do a followup poll about these things, about cooking, pickeling, baking, jam making and such
@4censord At first I was like "surely ironing is something anyone can do because it doesn't really need instructions" but then I remember some people don't understand the symbols/materials whenever it's safe to iron at all because plastic will melt or catch on fire instead xD
@4censord I can spin yarn and weave
@ulktante oh thats cool!
If I'd do the poll again I would definetly include these, but i forgot :/
@4censord i learned how to crochet at some point but not sure i remember anymore
@luna @4censord same. but i like do be able to do the whole list from above
@4censord who is that so called “I”
@katze i had considered doing {i, this one} but that made the post hard to read
@4censord :( usually this one does “the reader” instead
@katze oh thats very resonable, i'll try to remember for the future
@4censord I'm pretty sure school taught me all of those things besides the last two, but now I don't know how to do any of those skills, since I never used them over the past 15 years or so
@4censord I'm sure using a sewing machine would come back to me if I tried for a while, but anything else textile-related I learned at school? no chance
@quad wait you had these things in school?
i didnt have these things in school i, i learned them at home
@4censord From 8th to 10th grade we had crafts, half a school term of each.

The classes got split into groups and over the span of the three grades everyone rotated between:
- Arts (Painting)
- Woodworking
- Textile work
- Cooking
- Two others I can't remember right now lmao

If I remember correctly it was approx. two hours per week, so for like half a school term I had to work with textiles, needles and sewing machines weekly.

I remember absolutely NOTHING besides sewing machines being less "plug-and-play" than one would initially expect.
@4censord I might technically have the last two points covered as well, I think the final task might have been to sew together a hat or something, but I can't quite remember.
@4censord I thought it was niche, but apparently the subject (Sløyd) is actually well known enough to have an English wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloyd
Sloyd - Wikipedia

@quad @4censord Oh wow thats actually really cool
@quad @4censord I learned it at school AND at home.
@4censord who in the world can sew their own clothes without a pattern, that's insane
@soapie i mean without a premade pattern, making your own or doing a one-off
@soapie @4censord
I actually studied modelism for a year. That’s how I learnt it. The other option is to take a garment you like and that fits well and „copy“ the pattern from that.
@samy that's really cool!
@soapie
It is. But the industry was so appalling at the time that I switched with a heavy heart. But it’s a really handy life skill :).

@soapie @4censord

I once made a party dress without a pattern, so I ticked yes for that. I sort of shaped the fabric around me and marked where to stitch, and then stitched, and then put it on and marked it again and stitched it again. And then I drew a pattern of shapes onto the fabric with iron-on crayon. It wasn't something I would've worn to go to the shops in :-)

I think one of my later dresses was partly based on the shape of that one, but I did make a pattern on paper first that time.

@4censord What about book screws? xD
@4censord I didn't vote for the fifth one but I'd at least try
@4censord and the first two no, but crochetting would be possible if I try again and have a manual again (did it in school, then never afterwards) :3
@4censord this reminds me I reeeeeally wanna learn how to sew
@4censord it's been awhile but I could hem. And I've sown basic clothing from a pattern
@4censord Although I rarely do anything more than sew on a button, I CAN do more major work. The legacy of a mum who had three boys and one girl, and made sure we could all sew and iron before we left home, and I am now 60, so that was a bit radical for Britain at the time.

@4censord
Way back in Home Economics I discovered I was good at, and enjoyed, machine stitching with a template.

Made so many stuffed animals in that class 🤣

My skills are gone, I am strictly limited to really ugly but serviceable small repair by hand-sewing now.

@4censord If there were enough options for surveys to add "I can assemble clothes by modifying a given pattern", I would add that. It's a big gap between using a pattern as given and making without a pattern at all. Most of my sewing has involved finding patterns that were close to what I was going for, and combining or modifying in some other way.

@kristinHenry I didnt think of that :/, there would have been space in the poll

But with the given options I'd count that under "make clothing by following a pattern", as we have major alterations included in the one before that already

@4censord wasn't 100% sure on the "without a pattern" one because when I make stuff the first step is to draft a pattern from scratch, like I don't think I could just wing it and cut the fabric freehand
@raine making a one-off pattern in my mind counts as without a pattern, because its not a pre-made one, because making a pattern requires different skills from just following one
@4censord I picked crochet, major alterations and assembling clothing because although I rarely do those, am rather bad and need a lot of time, I CAN still do them. If I have to. But knitting and minor fixes are really the things I would casually say "I can"
@4censord I'd have expected more people to be able to knit than to do major sewing!

@4censord I am very good at making patterns and resizing them, but my wife does all the sewing on the sewing machine. So my input is all at design and patterning with sometimes some cutting.

She can do all of the things though.

@4censord

I can make my own clothes but only with easy fabrics. And slowly.

@4censord none of the above, but where is the "i can repair your sewing machine when it breaks"? :) #scnr
@4censord what if the appropriate answer is "none of the above"?
@4censord
This week I have shortened trousers for my brother. About to shorten some for me. I have a granny square crochet in progress to make a hat and a knitted black v neck jumper waiting to be finished. Too hot to do either. I have some material ready to make a skirt (simple gathers) and matching loose blouse. No pattern needed. Been waiting for some nice weather to wear it. About to alter a dress for my daughter. Just Finishing altering a linen shirt to a short unlined jacket with cotton lace inside hem sleeve edges and collar. Added patch pockets.
( I am retired)
@4censord hmm maybei can but doesn’t mean i do it well, so i usually ask people who can do it better if they’re available
@4censord I just darned some socks!
@4censord None of the above.

@4censord I used to be able to crochet, but could not really start any more - I would need to start as a novice again.

I can knit. I think I could pick it up again quickly - although I haven't done any for 40 years or more.

I can do small repairs - I sew patches on my battle jacket. I can make some tweaks, but wouldn't claim to do it well.

@4censord All of the above.
@4censord I've never shortened clothes myself, but i sewed things from a pattern so i hope i could?
