The thing EVERY conversation about social media bans for youth misses -- completely and absolutely: social media is bad for adults too.
Algorithmically driven social media is a smokescreen for data collection and surveillance -- for adtech and other uses.
It's bad for all ages.
@funnymonkey Yes, but it's because the presupposition is that #uk adults can make their own decisions including making decisions that harm themselves. So, if UK adults want to be brainwashed by hate and outrage, or agree to social media terms of service to have their emotions farmed for clicks and profit and to put them in disinformation silos, then that's their prerogative.
The state only steps in when that same process results in them committing (or going to commit) extreme acts of violence.
Tbf, the State has stepped in to prevent protests against climate change and genocide too.....

It's the same thing with social media, social media corporation's interests trump those of the individual, the state will only step in when you the individual take the forced on you social media brainwashing too far and commit acts of violence, but then the action taken is against you not against them.
Yes, exactly, and faced with the choice of regulating foreign social media (aka data collection) companies or forcing 60 million UK citizens to verify their identities online the UK govt chooses the second option.
