Today in Labor History April 19, 1927: The authorities sentenced Hollywood star Mae West to 10 days in jail for obscenity, for her play, “Sex.” Billboard called the play "the cheapest most vulgar low show to have dared to open in New York this year." However, it played 375 before the NYPD shut it down and was a commercial success, despite the poor reviews.

West was famous for portraying sexually confident characters and for her use of double entendres. She wrote and performed in numerous plays in the 1910s-1920s and Vaudevillian acts, before becoming a successful film actor, playing alongside such greats as W.C. Fields, Cary Grant. She also recorded several record albums, including some rock and roll. She was frequently associated with controversies over censorship and once stated, "I believe in censorship. I made a fortune out of it."

So I've been rewatching Jonathan Creek with family and, as expected, most of the content outside of the mystery plots is bugging me. Mostly it's obvious stuff like being weird about gender ambiguity, stereotypes of various groups that it's considered more or less acceptable in white upper-middle class Britain to be suspicious of, low-key fat shaming (probably high key once or twice), basically every single Adam Klaus B-plot, all that. I won't be specific because most examples would be spoilers I guess.

But besides all of that stuff I've always been uncertain about the relationship between Jonathan and Maddie and the way she seems to be constantly skirting the edges of being unreasonable and uncommunicative and selfish and inconsistent about telling Jonathan what she wants. It's never quite anything I can nail down and when it happens I always feel like the show is trying to imply that Jonathan putting up with this is just progressive and modern? But I can't really cite anything that jumped out at me.

There's a vibe of "women are just kind of irrational and a pain to deal with sometimes but we're good feminist men who understand that's normal and don't make a fuss", right? But then I wonder if I'm just being too harsh on Maddie, maybe I am the sexist one for finding her unreasonable in the first place.

And then I remember all the other stuff in the show and I'm like. Probably David Renwick is just being middle-class sexist in the way he writes the character. Right?

I've been getting messages on Facebook all day from women calling me names like "useless bitch" for pointing out that "62 million men" is misinformation that diminishes the horror of it being ANY men.

I hope they're putting this much energy into apologising to the women they've hit with the "huh, well I've never seen him do anything like that" over the years and deleting the "I stand with Johnny Depp" posts from their socials.

Because I can literally quote from memory the academic articles I've posted for years about rape culture. I live this research.
