“We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water & people buy it from us on a meter.”

- Sam Altman

As someone whose books were taken without permission to train OpenAI, I have a problem with this.

How can a company claim to own work it didn’t create & sell it back to us?

Sam Altman Says Intelligence Will Be a Utility, and He's Just the Man to Collect the Bills

"Intelligence too cheap to meter" doesn't quite come across the way Altman might intend.

Gizmodo
@Sheril who the hell gives him the right to own intellgence?
@mcahalane @Sheril both electricity and water used to be “public” utilities.

@mcahalane
Ah, welcome to the wonderful work of intellectual property.

Where things like thoughts that you might have independently become illegal.

No matter if it's a specific algorithm, or a character or the plot of movie.

The funny thing is that the propaganda suggests that the creative professionals profit most from these, but generally it's the big corporations that profit most.
@Sheril

@mcahalane
Note that the availability of powerful enough LLM literally puts the finger on some absurdities of IP law: it's kind of impossible with only the output to tell if it was created by a LLM or an goo human.

Compare to the issue was it created by human A or human B. Notice how in the cases we generally do try to solve the issue but comparing circumstances and not by analysing the style of the output to guess who was the creator.
@Sheril

@mcahalane @Sheril there was a pretty high profile article making the rounds that developers say they become dependent on AI, new students use AI for all of their homework now and do learn a lot less than they used to.
The clear message is:
You will become dependent on AI and we are going to make you pay for it.
The Internet is suffering, if you can't find information anymore, you are forced to ask the AI and you will pay.
@mcahalane @Sheril If he cut back on the cocaine & whatever other drugs and the number of guys running a train on him every night at the Thiel parties, enough blood might flow to his head instead of his prostate for him to say he's enclosing the information commons or similar instead of those kinds of malapropisms where not oxymorons. I even doubt any of the TESCREAL techbros ever learned even undergrad compsci material & further suspect that however little of minds they went through their educations with (or into, given partying through uni) have long been too fried by drugs to ever actually practise any of those basics. So it might be even worse than that & all be nothing but sci-fi they're too delusional & drugged to distinguish from reality.
@Sheril reminds me of Nestlé and water. Or Nestlé and baby formula. Or Nestlé and child labor.
@P__X @Sheril yes, I also had this (probably pretty obvious) association.
Corporations grow by turning things that used to be free into profits.
One of the most absurd aspects of capitalism.

@mxk @Sheril yes, it's encoded in the system. the other example is the air travel industry. make basic experiences so convoluted and frustrating that ppl pay for what used to be basic and call it "basic PLUS". (exactly what's happening w/ internet search ATM).

What this system used to be based on (at least in the US) is a sort of societal contract that was like "we're OK with this as long as services improve on the whole". Breaches in these contracts tend to lead to revolts, that hit profits

@Sheril
any molecule of Sam Altman is a abusive fraud in itself, the whole bunch of it is the same, no wonder.
@Sheril That's seriously fucked up. Rage against the machine.

@Sheril Genuinely, we should have seen this coming as far back as Aaron Schwartz, if not earlier. We've normalized journals selling papers back to the universities and governments that paid for the research, for longer than I've been alive. Of course some other dogshit capitalists would take note of that easy money, like Hitler watching the public acceptance of the Armenian genocide.

The rot isn't new. We're just seeing it from new angles, angles which make it feel blatant for what it is.

@Sheril there’s so much wrong with this narrative, beyond the IP issues. The notion that intelligence is a commodity is abhorrent. The important parts of intelligence — things like accountability, judgement, and context — cannot be commoditised.

@daniel @Sheril in general, it is this type that chooses not to understand, and consequently to intentionally or deliberately exploit, the distinction between paying for applied skills versus time spent on a project.

Do it well and swift? You are overpriced. Do it well but slow? Your are overrated. In general, these types are the core proponents of applying a competence tax; they provide no tangible value beyond the incarnation of biological middleware.

His propaganda is but one of many sins.

@daniel @Sheril A machine cannot feel the weight of our decisions.
@Sheril
- Something something
- hand wave
- capitalism
- political graft
- 'we own your work now'
@Sheril wow! Just wow! As someone who's got no books to be taken without permission to train OpenAI, I not only agree with people whose books were taken without permission to train OpenAI, but I think this is all just... Fucked up to the absolute deepest level imaginable!

@Sheril

How much does a genuine human thought cost? How much is its worth, what is its value? The whole basis of AI and LLM is based on previous knowledge built by generations of human beings. That cannot be own by anyone as it is our human heritage, a gift from previous generations to us all.
Making that your own is a theft, a crime against all of us.

#ai #llm

@Sheril

And they’ll sell us sunlight, air, and water too if we let them.

@Sheril yes, that's absolutely true 👍

@Sheril

This is the return to true age of "American Greatness". Robber Barons of the 21st Century.

@adavid @Sheril
Thanks Anthony, I had to read your toot twice to comprehend the content my eyes were cherry picking...
Bill

@OhMrBill @Sheril

You are welcome Bill. I have missed a word. Typos and other errors are rife in my tootstream. I have a pinned toot about that :)

@Sheril this can't be emphasized enough.

They're nothing but thieves and grifters. Governments and law institutions are doing almost nothing. All in the name of "progress." Altman and the other snake oil merchants keep promising them things they don't understand. And instead of surrounding themselves with knowledgeable people, they just buy the fools gold, no questions asked, either hoping it's real or scared they'll be left behind if they don't.

@Sheril All capitalism is based on theft.
@Sheril don’t worry he’s a grifter the entire AI thing is a lie that will fail, it is still horrible he stole from you but he’s stealing from his investors too. It’s vapor ware
@Sheril and then like Monsanto suing farmers when their seeds blew over, OpenAI can sue people for having copyrighted thoughts.
@Sheril I liked the analogy of someone photocopying all of the books in a library, burning down said library and then charging for the photocopies. Not my analogy but I like it.
@Sheril
I can appreciate that in today's world intelligence is in demand. I'd like to offer a radical idea, educate humans.
@Sheril
Why does someone who seems to "own" all this intelligence sound so stupid?
@Sheril Because governments are too afraid to stop them, and the rest of us aren't really sure how.

@Sheril

What a truly amazing concept. Here's my ad:

"Want to seem more intelligent than you are? Want to stay at home and not contribute to society?
Look no further!
Homo Sapien, with over 66 years of experience, now available for all your intelligence needs for the low, low price of $5.9 billion per word. And for those getting in at the ground floor, just use the code @SuckerBornEveryMinute for a fantastic 18% increase in your initial cost.
Hurry, stocks limited. Get in now before the Grim Reaper beats you to it!"

@Sheril Fun fact: if US billionaires were shot at the same rate as US schookids, within two months there'd be no billionaires left!

@Sheril this is highlighting the flaws of copyright and intellectual property laws once more. Seeing this reminds me how Google and all the others got away with the same.

What we really need is an international Reform of these laws that remove the options to circumvent legal requirements with the most money and political influence, and prevent uneven laws bring put into effect favoring the "big guys".

@Sheril Someone got their idea of how "utilities" relate to society from Tank Girl, apparently.
@Sheril it’s because that’s why.

@Sheril
Not buying his shit now and i wont in the future. I will keep my intelligence as long as my brain and body let me and share that with humans 👻 not using llm stuff is a good start for both aspects.

@Mayleen @Sheril I've been renting mine out for 30 years.

Was anyway.

@Sheril
Well. Selling a statistical parrot as intelligence ...
I have no legal words left here, so good night 😡

@Sheril

And speaking to each other will be banned as it will be viewed as sharing information off grid. If they can’t make money, it can’t be allowed.

@Sheril
And for me that was the original sin of AI. If you do it as individual you can go to jail or worse, but a big tech can go unpunished.
@Sheril Agreed. Also put the free code they use. Free came out of generosity they don't propagate.
@Sheril Indigenous people know how this scheme works.
@Sheril Intelligence? He keeps using that word. I don't think it means what he thinks it means...
(With apologies to Mandy Patinkin)
@Sheril these self claimed tech geniuses are the most stupid people's in the world 🌍...most of them are college drops out. They haven't done full education in their life. & trying to education others
@Sheril none of that quote makes any sense. Intelligence is a property of a mind, even if they had an artificial mind, paying for that mind to think about what you request would not be buying intelligence.
@Sheril
AI in a generic form will fail.
@Sheril
Sam Altman isn't half as smart as he thinks he is.
