The new freebsd.org is live.

The updated FreeBSD website delivers a cleaner design, improved navigation, and a stronger foundation for the Project’s future.

The new site makes it easier to:
• Get started with FreeBSD
• Access documentation and downloads
• Explore core technologies like ZFS, bhyve, and Jails
• Connect with the FreeBSD community

Congratulations to everyone who contributed to making this happen.

really? T_T

@FreeBSDFoundation also the new site looks like generic silicon-valley adjacent product. https://www.freebsd.org/images/beastie-right.svg is so hecking uncanny

the old design will be dearly missed

@pj @FreeBSDFoundation that’s the Classic, it’s great. but it loads an svg in the footer now, which looks completely out of place
Yeah the new design looks terrible, given that old one presented same information and used free space better: https://web.archive.org/web/20251223060941/https://www.freebsd.org/
The only positive thing about new design is that it's responsive and mobile friendly (unless I'm mistaken and archive.org fucks with the CSS and breaks it)

From one of the Foundation's previous posts, I'm fairly certain that they use (or used) a platform/service that's designed to cater for around twenty-eight social media and other platforms, some of which are so constrained that shortening occurs.

@FreeBSDFoundation i know people are a bit nit-picky about the new site design being very simple and corporate-esque

but to be honest, I don't think it's that bad imo (although I like older site designs, this one isn't the worst at all)

@FreeBSDFoundation
I love the new #freebsd website design! It works really well on my mobile too now!
🏩 🤟

@FreeBSDFoundation How to switch to the old design of site? I didn't see any link like old.freebsd.org

New design looks like default corpo/startup landing  , while the old one had the good vibes and matched with OpenBSD and NetBSD sites in some details

Please replace the horrid vector traced Beastie image with the real image.

@FreeBSDFoundation

Yeah, the comments confirm what has been already said, that is, website looks "meh" but because it's more "modern", because it's new, people favour it over the older one. The point is that it could have been refreshed by fixing the pain points without killing whole vibe.

@grahamperrin @markmcb @thedaemon @domi @FreeBSDFoundation
@pj which comments, where?
in the link you posted and following all other links re: website redesign

@grahamperrin

@pj I'm not convinced.

Which of these comments in Reddit supports your analysis?

I don't need to read everything ever written just like I don't have to explain myself to you (but yes, I'm very quick when reading stuff and there wasn't much to read when skipping quoted posts).
I've stated my opinion about the website and I have no interest in wasting my time by posting proofs in some fedi argument.

@grahamperrin
FreeBSD website redesign...

Any thoughts on the FreeBSD website redesign?

The FreeBSD Forums

@pj you're recommending a link that's already on the fourth line of the opening post in Reddit (see my previous post).

I added the link three days ago, I have revisited the topic more than once.

@grahamperrin @markmcb @thedaemon @pj @FreeBSDFoundation from my very quick glance over the linked thread(s), it feels like there’s more people that dislike the redesign than people who liked it.

then again, i’m not really interested in raging a flamewar against a decision you’ve already made, especially when the main point ‘pro’ is looking modern (something which I find to be a huge detriment)

@domi @grahamperrin @markmcb @thedaemon @pj @FreeBSDFoundation while I also dislike the soulless modern corpo-web look, it's important to realize that people with stronger opinions are more likely to reply than those without. It's quite possible that there's a lot more people looking at this and thinking "oh neat" than thinking "this sucks", just that the latter segment is more likely to reply.
@endrift @domi @grahamperrin @thedaemon @pj @FreeBSDFoundation You are correct. Last July when I prototyped this I got feedback from over a hundred folks. The new layout is strongly preferred. That said, I agree with your soulless statement. Several design elements were stripped out as this went through formal review and the result feels a bit sterile. Generic fonts play a big role, and the header/footer need to be reworked. It’s certainly being discussed.

@markmcb thanks. I don't think of it as soulless, however I'm glad that it's being discussed.

Also, the post-drop discussions are no surprise 🙂

I suspect that the vast majority of people have not read the opening comment in the review. Readers probably need to click at least four times to reveal <https://reviews.freebsd.org/D53910#1232233> (26th/28th November 2025). I might quote and pin that comment in Reddit. @thismarkp OK with you if I do so? Thanks.

⚙ D53910 website: complete refresh of beastie theme

@endrift @domi @grahamperrin @thedaemon @pj @FreeBSDFoundation The other thing to note is the deletion of text and links was intentional. This may need a few iterations but the intent is to reduce any friction the website itself may create that prevents a first-time install.

I also think we need to give thought to what’s the page for the non-new people. I can almost imagine a data dense “other front page” that’s maybe a click away and highly consumable by veteran users.

@thismarkp cc @markmcb during the review period, I refrained from commenting on the colossal logo and the unused space below.

FWIW I imagine much of that space (including the logo) as a blank canvas for a future carousel, something like that.

Don't ask me to wireframe a carousel. I'll make one of its elements an animated GIF that complains about carousels being too corporate ;-)

@markmcb @thismarkp

Something's subtly missing from the front page. We see four aspects of the OS, but (unless I'm missing something) no catchy overview. A keyword with which very few people argue:

― cohesion.

Development of FreeBSD is not uniquely cohesive, however IMHO it is a very strong selling point.

Toying with two chunks from the Foundation's description of FreeBSD, in no particular order:

― secure, stable, high-performance, modern, community-governed, open source, enterprise-friendly permissive licensing, single production-ready package

― long-standing, highly active, democratically managed, elected core team, FreeBSD Project, FreeBSD Foundation.

Cherry-pick the best from those two chunks to form something like an elevator pitch for the front page. Can it be done without creating friction? I don't know. Ha.

@endrift thanks.

A thought. In the r/freebsd subreddit, it's not unusual for people to be EXTREMELY critical of perceived problems with design etc. The absence of a storm of protest is, I think, a compliment.

The FreeBSD Forums is, naturally, a very different kettle of fish. It's primarily for existing users of FreeBSD …

AI could have redrawn Beastie better than that SVG nonsense.

@thedaemon @domi @pj @FreeBSDFoundation Agreed. I’m very much opposed to this graphic. It’s part of the source system (/usr/src/examples/BSD_daemon/) and there are some strong opinions about using it. I will continue to push for removal or to create fresh replacement. If anyone knows a willing artist, I’d be happy to discuss it.
@Lili in what way was the 2015 version more soulful?
@grahamperrin It doesn't matter what the previous website was like, even if it was a plagiarised version of Microsoft's main page or something (it wasn't, I'm putting a drastic example), I'm still allowed to criticise the new one.

@Lili sure, it'll be nice to understand what you mean by soulless.

Is there a website for a different distro (BSD or Linux) that you think of as more soulful?

@grahamperrin Once again, none of the other websites matter in judging this one so I’m not answering this question. Reasons I find the new FreeBSD main page soulless:

  • top bar with plain colour background and monochrome logo because apparently we need to fit in the limits of CGA these days (at least the logo below is full colour)
  • the Native ZFS, Virtualization and so on ad section that takes half a screen and distracts me from what would be important to me as a user (Latest news etc.). If I want to read what FreeBSD is about, I can go to About → Introduction instead.
  • that god awful SVG of Beastie, look how they massacred my boy
  • ‘Made with love by the FreeBSD Community’ at this point gives me the opposite effect to the one intended, I would feel better with just the © section

I rediscovered 2023 discussions of the new design for the main site, parts of which began in a topic about the FreeBSD Handbook (in the documentation portal, which had already been redesigned).

They're now in the opening post, with Sergio credited, at <https://redd.it/1teayk4>.

@markmcb @thismarkp

Pages such as <https://www.freebsd.org/community> can not be reached through the hamburger.

When the hamburger menu is forced: the Community submenu can not load the Community page. Other submenu headings may be similarly bugged.

Without the hamburger, with Community as a menu (not a submenu): a click on the menu item for Community does work.

@thismarkp sorry for not noticing this sooner.

Cc @pauamma only because I vaguely remember you commenting about top level menu behaviours long ago (maybe three or four years ago in Bugzilla).

#FreeBSD #hamburger #menus #UX

As a relatively quick improvement, not yet attempting to fix the hamburger menu, you could create a link to the Community page from within the main band of six items.

@grahamperrin @thismarkp also missing placeholder in the search field.
@alex_deplov I can't visualise the issue, can you edit a screenshot into your post? Thanks
@grahamperrin it's exactly on your screenshot: the search field of the website is empty, but usually there is a "Search" placeholder.
