All these people who whinge on about it being soooo expensive need to realise one thing:

We are building something that is going to last and be useful for the next 200 years.

With that perspective, almost any cost is a bargain.

Some examples:

Metropolitan Railway (1863, 163 years old) - now forms parts of the Met, District and Circle lines (among others) of the London Underground

Forth Bridge, Scotland (1890, 136 years old)

Royal Border Bridge, Berwick Upon Tweed (1850, 176 years old)

Skerne Bridge, Darlington (1825, 201 years old)

(From NZ) Raurimu Spiral (1898, 128 years old)

All of these are in regular and active use today. People need to get some perspective.
