The contrast between the number of media requests I got when rich people on a cruise were facing a deadly, but contained outbreak versus now that some of the poorest people in the world are facing a deadly and devastating epidemic is just so so stark and it just really annoys the hell out of me.

@kakape

Sounds like the contrast beetwen people being outraged about initial COVID restrictions vs people being outraged that western countries, in particular Germany, not only refused to free open source the vaccines but even stockpiled them instead of supporting the *shit hole* countries.

These countries just realized that given the amount of world population a life style as their own for everyone is not sustainable, so they decided to reduce world population "by al means necesarry".

You (actally we) might need to start to wonder how to convert that anoyance into energy and where to apply it best.

@jesuisatire @kakape The first Trump administration's response *in the US* was based on an expectation that blue states would suffer more. They didn't care at all how many died in their own country never mind the total indifference to other countries. The abolition of USAID and the extortion of minerals that has followed now is more of the same.

Africa is the forgotten continent in the so-called Western and so-called civilized world mass media.

Yet there is the silent exploitation of Africa still going on, for example for minerals for mobile phones, fossilfuels, cheap labor and what not. All with large profits for the West.

Ironically I do believe that the world should learn from Africa, learn about the word Ubuntu and work towards unity, real freedom and real peace instead of the ever boring capitalism and stinky old-fashioned colonial exploitation.

Save the planet, and don't forget about Africa.

#africa #unity #humanrights

@regendans a just transition means no one is left behind and that should include Africa.
@regendans #Africa is and will be rich, not least in culture and spirit. #Africa is the future, as well as the present and the past of the whole human race. Let's not shed tears for #Africa, rather ask to come along for the ride.
@kakape I feel like that's something to lead with when they ask you your opinion.
@kakape And I'm super annoyed on your behalf. I really appreciate your reporting on the ebola situation (and all your reporting, actually).

@kakape

I think Masque of Red Death explored the error of thinking class can protect you from an epidemic.

@Phosphenes @kakape

that story was in my head for two years (2020-2022) as a reminder that no one can escape death. not even the rich and powerful.

(I also watched my favorite zombie movies during that time)

my coping response to assholery in the world is "one day these motherfucker's will die"

@coolcalmcollected @Phosphenes @kakape

I reread the Decameron. ;) Just cause, sometimes you can escape death for a little while, and you can do a lot with that time.

@kakape I'm annoyed as well and I'm sure that is a big part. However, it sounds superficially like Yet Another Ebola story, so media attention is lower than for Hanta also because it is less novel to a general audience.
@fataqe @kakape racism I think its called
@Kaetchi yes, so?
@fataqe just a comment and in my life time got a bit better now worsening again
@Kaetchi yeah I can relate :(
@kakape
Fortunately, the poor are more likely to listen than the rich…
@kakape reminds me of the wall-to-wall coverage that billionaire submarine implosion got, compared to very little coverage of 600+ (?) refugees dying in a boat accident near Greece the week before.
@jamesmarshall @kakape well now, that's just over-reporting on good news!
@kakape last time ebola showed up in NYC we got an ebola vaccine so maybe this time we'll get some progress too?
@kakape It's the same as all the resources that were deployed when those moron billionaires imploded by the Titanic.
@kakape I work in health care & am still very angry about the cognitive dissonance by many staff in health care.
@kakape
In this case it has nothing to do with poor/rich. They ain't white, that's the reason.
@kakape Me too. It was similar when 3,500 or so people died in the twin towers attack in New York on 7/11 when around the same time 50,000 died in an earthquake in India. The latter catastrophe barely rated a mention.
