Ending his #IRS lawsuit could allow #Trump to pursue a #settlement instead [he’d likely lose the lawsuit, he might get $$ from a settlement].

Trump moved on Monday to dismiss his extraordinary $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS that claimed the tax agency had improperly released some of his financial records [records he had promised to release himself].

Justice Dept. Announces $1.8 Billion Fund in Settling I.R.S. Suit

The dismissal appears to be part of the Trump administration’s effort to effectively settle the case, which stemmed from the leak of his tax returns in 2019.

The New York Times

The move comes after the White House floated a proposal to end the lawsuit in exchange for creating a $1.7 billion fund to compensate supporters of #Trump who felt they had been mistreated by Democratic admins [what?].

The #settlement would be agreed upon by Trump’s private lawyers & the #DOJ [Trump’s other private lawyers] without feedback from the #judge overseeing the case.

The decision to dismiss the suit could also allow #Trump & the #DOJ to avoid a potentially embarrassing ruling from Judge Kathleen M. Williams of the Southern District of Florida finding that Trump’s suit was invalid. #Judge Williams has considered dismissing Trump’s suit because he effectively controls both his personal lawyers bringing the complaint & the government lawyers who are supposed to respond to it.

#Judge Williams had ordered the #DOJ, which has yet to make an appearance or filing in the case, & #Trump’s lawyers to brief her by Wednesday to explain whether they were actually in opposition — or were colluding to achieve a mutually agreeable outcome. [oh, they are definitely colluding]

In their filing on Monday, Trump’s lawyers said their dismissal meant that “no judicial analysis is appropriate” for the suit. [IOW no #oversight.]

The substance of Trump’s suit stems from the leak of his tax returns to The New York Times in 2019. #Trump, 2 of his sons & his family business argue that the #IRS should have done more to prevent a former contractor from leaking tax information to The Times & ProPublica.

While federal #law allows for people to sue the IRS when their tax information is leaked, legal experts saw clear flaws in Trump’s suit….

So freaking illegal. There was literally no one representing the American people.

#DOJ announces a $1.7B fund to compensate #Trump allies in a deal to drop #IRS suit

The “Anti-Weaponization Fund” was announced by the DOJ as part of a “deal” to “resolve” Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS.

DOJ announces nearly $1.8B fund to compensate Trump allies

The Trump administration has announced the creation a nearly $1.8 billion fund to compensate allies of the Republican president who believe they have been unjustly investigated and prosecuted. The “Anti-Weaponization Fund” was announced by the Justice Department on Monday as part of a deal to resolve President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service over the leak of his tax returns. Democrats and government watchdogs immediately pledged to fight what they called a “corrupt” and unprecedented resolution. Trump’s lawyers disclosed the dismissal of the IRS lawsuit in a filing in federal court in Florida, where the president sued earlier this year.

AP News

Acting AG #ToddBlanche said in announcing the fund in a statement that it was “a lawful [nope] process for victims of lawfare & weaponization to be heard & seek redress.”

#Democrats & #government #watchdogs immediately pledged to fight what they called a #corrupt & unprecedented resolution, warning that the arrangement would unjustly enrich people close to the president with #TaxpayerMoney & open the door to meritless claims of political persecution.

The #MAGASlushFund would represent not only a highly unorthodox resolution but also a further demonstration of the admin’s eagerness to reward allies who before #Trump came to #power were investigated & in many cases charged & #convicted. Most notably, Trump on his first day back in office pardoned or commuted the sentences of supporters who violently attacked the US Capitol on #Jan6, 2021.

Justice Department Announces Anti-Weaponization Fund

The U.S. Department of Justice today announced that as a part of the settlement agreement in President Donald J. Trump v. Internal Revenue Service, the Attorney General established “The Anti-Weaponization Fund” to provide a systematic process to hear and redress claims of others who suffered weaponization and lawfare.

Just minutes after Trump’s lawyers informed Judge Williams of their intention to dismiss the suit, 93 Democratic lawmakers filed court papers accusing the #DOJ having “colluded” with #Trump & asking the judge to throw out the case herself [TYVM].

“Never in the history of the United States has a sitting president sought a monetary settlement from the government he leads — let alone sought many billions of dollars in taxpayer funds,” lawyers for the lawmakers wrote.

@Nonilex Not trying to be doomerpilled about this but, honestly, who cares? What difference does it make?
@prism @Nonilex It’s important to document the corruption.
@CStamp @Nonilex Only if someone does something about it. Otherwise we're just the band playing on the Titanic.
@prism @Nonilex After this regime is ousted, it will make it easier to pursue accountability. It was a HUGE mistake by Biden to not pursue accountability for the sedition, hopefully a mistake that won’t be repeated in the future. The corruption with this regime is monumental.
@CStamp @Nonilex The precedent thusfar has been to not indict the prior administration. AFAIK the business records thing was the first time anyone in the US went after a former President for anything. I'm not at all confident a President Newsom, for instance, will break this trend. So while I'd certainly like to see this happen, I'll believe it when I see it.

For 20 Years, Team Bush Has Escaped Prosecution for Their War Crimes in Iraq

One year after Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the International Criminal Court charged him with war crimes.

@prism @Nonilex Prior admins never tried to steal an election, literally. Spanky should have had to face trial in Georgia, and that should have been the beginning. Instead, a different precedent was set: you can attempt to overturn an election and face no consequence.
