@otte_homan not at all. Plenty of pilgrims travel in small groups. And even if you travel alone, you end up chatting with various nonrandom strangers along the way.

One of the oldest parts of the Via Turonensis runs near where I live, and the more popular route is not far away. An enthusiast who made the pilgrimage several times wrote a book about it and gave illustrated lectures in full costume. It's not usually a solo thing: walking with other pilgrims and meeting people in the overnight accommodation (for which you must be a registered pilgrim) is an important part. It's considered a spiritual experience rather than religious.
