HAWAII JUST KILLED #CITIZENSUNITED
AND MORE GREAT NEWS THAT RUINED TRUMP’S WEEKEND

Hawaii found the one thing the court never addressed: corporations only exist because states allow them to. Which means that every power a corporation has was given to it by the state. Hawaii just took one of those powers off the list—starting next year, corporations in Hawaii can no longer spend money on state and local elections.

A grieving son rewrote the law. Small businesses beat Trump's tariffs in court. And Denver told the DOJ to go to hell.

Boom! Mic drop heard from the middle of the pacific to the Atlantic coast.

Hawaii strips corporations of Citizens United overreach that destroys democracy.

Law of the land.

Hats off for Hawaii!

@kbsez hell yeah! Montana is also in the process of doing this, love to see it!!
@kbsez makes for a change to empoverished minorities accused of violent crimes

@kbsez I've been trying to tell people for years that each state is wearing Ruby slippers that allow it to regulate the actions of corporations chartered by that state.

(States already have significant regulations over corporations that are formed under the state - for example accounting rules, bulk transfer limitations, etc.)

My own proposals called for no expenditures of corporate assets unless approved by unanimous consent of the shareholders. This would allow many closly corporations to make political donations but would effectively deny larger corporations from doing so.)

Montana folks have already picked up the cue...

Transparent Election Initiative
@kbsez
State and local, nothing about federal.
Baby steps, I guess.
@dsmdexter have to attack on ALL FRONTS!

@kbsez
I'm trying to understand what exactly does this mean. Are non-profits (of various types also considered "corporations"?

And is there anything (there, or elsewhere) that stops a local rich family from spending lots of money on elections directly?

@kbsez

This has always been the way to muzzle corporations. State by state.

I wonder if any states will return to a time limit on corporations. Maybe a more clearly defined scope that prevents growth beyond set boundries.

I hope some states really think through this shit and come up with novel approaches to regulation.

This is extraordinary good news, as well as admirable legal jujitsu…
