#SanRemoto begins with a Eurocity travelling south from Switzerland. If I have to pay a âŹ19 seat reservation fee for my #Interrail to enter Italy, I would like to take a direct train that goes further than Milan. The 10:33 Eurocity connects Zurich with Genoa, Sestri Levante, La Spezia, Pisa, Livorno and other coastal towns in summer. There are free seats in first class on this Friday in May.
By the way: I like to choose my own seat based on my preferences. Is there a way to do this online with #Interrail for the EuroCity SwitzerlandâItaly service? I only know of ways where youâre randomly assigned a seat. On this journey, I had the honour of being assigned to @seatsixtyone.bsky.social

In Genoa, it is time to board the connecting #Trenitalia InterCity train (my second ever). At the moment, it seems like almost every train has coaches in both old and new liveries. This is an almost fully booked Friday afternoon InterCity train from Genoa along the coast towards the French border. #SanRemoto
I still find Trenitalia's E.414 Intercity locomotive slightly frightening. #SanRemoto
#Sanremo station, located in the double-track tunnel opened in 2001, is one of the main attractions of this short trip. A 450-metre tunnel connects the platforms with the entrance. #SanRemoto
#Sanremo 's old station is located just outside the old town. Some shops remain. Instead of tracks, the former railway line is now used as a cycle path. #SanRemoto
A new day, a new goal: trainspotting along one of the remaining coastal sections of the VentimigliaâGenoa railway line. The highlight is the first westbound #Trenitalia InterCity of the day. đ #SanRemoto
The #Tenda line is always worth a visit. The railway offers stunning vistas of rocky valleys, blending alpine and Mediterranean charm. This is particularly special for me as I haven't travelled on the Nice-Breil section before. My train has a lot more @siegeavecvue than passengers. My first TER on the #Tenda line is an AGC with a refurbished interior. It makes such a huge difference to the AGC's grimy, old interior. There is even a line-specific livery. Along the line, you can see the line's old rolling-stock. #SanRemoto
The #Tenda line is international, as the French trains run from Nice to Tende and the Italian trains from Cuneo to Ventimiglia, but crossing French territory. I have used the Italian one before, so I am feeling a bit lazy and haven't taken any pictures. #SanRemoto
I didn't know there were direct trains from Ventimiglia to Milan. However, even though it's a classic, loco-hauled regional train, I'm glad I can spend the night in Sanremo. #SanRemoto

Obligatory travel-home post: This journey from Sanremo to Zurich involves three uneventful InterCity and EuroCity trains. Having travelled more often to the north and the Baltic Sea, I am surprised at how quickly one can travel back home to Zurich from the Mediterranean Sea each time. I am still not used to this new ten-year-old Gotthard Base Tunnel. Grazie, ciao e a presto! đ #SanRemoto

@larstransportworld Jag tror det, Alfred Nobel bodde sina sista ür i San Remo vilket kan ha gjort staden känd fÜr svenskar. Men Evert Taube var sjÜman i sin ungdom och har skrivit visor om münga delar av världen.

@kasimir Depends on the section. The newest tunnel section is San Lorenzo-Andora. Andora-Finale is still at the coast, but a new tunnel section is planned.

Stefan Lindbohm@larstransportworld These reservations are hosted in Trenitaliaâs systems, so it would need to happen with a retailer supporting both Interrail pass fares and seat selection via the official Trenitalia API. I donât think anyone does at the moment, but I donât think anything technically or commercially prevents it.

@bovine3dom Oh wait, did you mean pick on seat map or not? There is a âŹ2 fee from Trenitalia related to seats, but maybe itâs only on Frecce trains and only seat map or something. Iâll be able to get back on this once we implement it :)
Weâre probably talking about two separate fees, one from HappyRail and one from Trenitalia in some cases

@stefanlindbohm @bovine3dom Renfe charges an extra fiver to pick your own seat. Though happyrailâs UI doesnât show it correctly, they claim itâs 0, and then tell you Renfe no longer has the ticket at that price, but 5⏠more expensive.
