TIL that an axe blade rotated by 90 degrees (like a hoe) is an "adze"
@nina_kali_nina it's an abbreviation
ADZE stands for Agressive Dissector Z-plane Edge, ADXE and ADYE are for blades in X-plane and Y-plane respectively. Here's a 3d-rendering showing the AD*E axis naming convention.
Axe is just a common misspelling of ADXE, which became acceptable like disk/disc

@kauzerei @nina_kali_nina
Hey I shared your picture at first because it's funny. But then I read your alt text and imagined someone listening to their screen reader.

Would it be possible to update it to something more descriptive ? I can help if you need.

@Zekovski @nina_kali_nina sorry, I thought two lines of description are enough to get what picture illustrates. I've edited it and made it longer and clearer.
But I'm keeping openscad code after description, I always share the source code of generated pictures like that, can't think of a better way to pack those together :D

@kauzerei @nina_kali_nina
Thank you very much.

I imagine if you want to share the code, you could also make a second comment. Eventually with a CW saying it's the code ?
But you may have a reason not to.

@kauzerei @nina_kali_nina in which case an ice axe with an adze at the rear (usual configuration) would be an ice-adxze
@kauzerei always carry your ADYE so you won't get trapped under wood!
@kauzerei This is magnificent, thank you very much,

@kauzerei @nina_kali_nina

I've only seen adye used in the other orientation, for cutting straight down. I guess this is the storage angle?

(For real, reminds me of a wood splitter for firewood that I have seen. Shingle splitters are used blade down, too, but have edge handles, rather than center:

Shop the Shingle and Riving Froe. Wood splitting tool for making shingles, fence posts, and furniture blanks. 12" blade and 20" handle for precise splits.

@elithebearded @nina_kali_nina don't be silly, have you ever seen an axe, used in any other orientation other than depicted? Same with the adye: the only standard-compliant way of holding it is pointing in positive z direction.
You can rotate the universe relative to the reference frame though :D

@kauzerei @nina_kali_nina

Okay, it's funny, but that last one is clearly a lirpa...

@TerryHancock @kauzerei why can't we call a spade a spade
The Monk Spade (or Fangbian Chan) a Buddhist and Taoist Weapon

The Fangbian Chan (or Monk Spade) is an unusual kind of weapon, which also Taoists possess and wandering Taoists bring with them in their travels. It is said that the Fangbian Chan is Laozi’s creation.

@kauzerei @nina_kali_nina So the Vulcan Lirpa is technically an adye?

https://scifi-weapons.fandom.com/wiki/Lirpa

Lirpa

The Lirpa is a traditional Vulcan weapon. It is composed of a wooden[2] or metal[3] shaft a little over a metre in length, with a crescent blade on one end and a large club on the other. The half below the shaped blade had some Vulcan lettering on it. The blade is extremely sharp, capable of cutting through metal. Lirpas are one of the weapons available for use in the kal-if-fee challange which formed a part of Vulcan mating rituals.[4] The Vulcan military has also used Lirpas on occasion...

@peterdrake @kauzerei @nina_kali_nina As is the "monk's spade", which is basically the inspiration for the lirpa.
@kauzerei
I was under the impression disc/disk was brittish/american.
@nina_kali_nina
@kauzerei @nina_kali_nina "disk" isn't technically a misspelling, it's an abbreviation of "diskette". Which is a disc contained within a casing (cassette), for example a 3.5" diskette. It is quite often misused, though.
@whimsy @kauzerei @nina_kali_nina I've also heard it alternately as the difference between optical media being discs and magnetic media being disks. The MO-Disc is socially disc but sits in a nowhere land.
@kauzerei @nina_kali_nina Semantic shift? I hate when that happens.
@kauzerei I never knew this. my fav is adze

@kauzerei @nina_kali_nina

This is the most expertly crafted tool joke in the whole barn

@kauzerei @nina_kali_nina
Spade seems like a typo derived from this system too

@hacknorris @nina_kali_nina this one?

Or do you mean the 4d generalization of Agressive Dissectors where the flat sides of the blade point in ana and kata durections? Wait, are the sides of a 4d axe voluminous, not flat? What dimensionality does the cutting edge has in 4d? Is it flat? Then the sides mus be still flat. But is there four of them I guess?
