Respirator masks like N95s will prevent hantavirus infection.

Clean air will drastically reduce hantavirus spread.

We already have the tools, people just need to use them.

Public health requires everyone’s participation.

“You do you” gets people killed

@broadwaybabyto oh wow is that the case for human to human transmission? that n95s will be adequate? i had wondered how that spread between humans. thank you :)
as i understand it with the strains of hantavirus we’ve seen historically in the US, if you are cleaning up or around rodent droppings/nests where the particles may be airborne, you need at minimum a half face elastomeric respirator with p100 protection/cartridges to protect yourself.
@conranimal Human-to-human infections are extremely rare and happen only with one strain from South-America where they have been. (Source: WHO infos).
I also doubt that N95 would be enough, do you have a scientific source for that, @broadwaybabyto ?
@NatureMC @conranimal @broadwaybabyto
"People involved in general clean-up activities where there is not heavy accumulation of droppings should wear disposable protective clothing and gloves (neoprene, nitrile, or latex-free), rubber boots and a disposable N95 respirator. For cleaning up... heavy accumulations of droppings... use powered air-purifying (PARP) or air-supplied respirators with P100 filters and eye or face protection to avoid contact with any aerosols."

Hantavirus

What is hantavirus? Hantavirus is a virus that is found in the urine, saliva, or droppings of infected deer mice and some other wild rodents (cotton rats, rice rats in the southeastern Unites States and the white-footed mouse and the red-backed vole).

@conranimal @broadwaybabyto SARS2 is far more transmissable than hantavirus and there are A LOT of people that still wear N95s who have never had COVID. A fit tested elastomeric is better, for sure, but N95s are still very very effective.
@broadwaybabyto And yet there are people who will fight any mandate for the use of such masks.
@broadwaybabyto are you suggesting we start wearing masks now? All because a few people on a cruise ship have been infected? This must be some type of joke.
@ee @broadwaybabyto that's not what they said, but you do remember the covid cruise ship right? everyone said the same thing about that and now we're 6 years into a pandemic

@imbl COVID didn't start escalating on any ship, but that doesn't really matter.

According to the @WHO, the public health emergency caused by COVID-19 ended in May 2023, and by 2025, experts generally considered the pandemic to have transitioned into the endemic phase.

Importantly though, Hantavirus can barely spread from person to person. Completely different situation.

@broadwaybabyto Best I can do is denial
