Lichens illuminated with UV light at dusk on the Solway shore, South West Scotland. Seeing the world in a different light.. #lichensubscribe
@MikeBolam Fascinating Mike, thank you for sharing. Was that "illuminated with UV and shot with a <normal> camera" please?
@FourT4 Hi Jon, yes I used a fairly small UV 365nm torch to “paint”paint the foreground, and photographed with a standard DSLR with an exposure of 30 seconds.
@MikeBolam That's really impressive, did you bring a big spotlight for the photoshoot?
@nihl Hi, no, I used a handheld UV torch and painted the foreground over a 30 second exposure.
@MikeBolam Oh I see, the result is very smooth
@MikeBolam The longer I ponder, the easier to liken lichen.
@MikeBolam so beautiful!! Wow! I had no idea it glowed under UV.
I’ve seen cut rocks glow under UV and it’s amazing how much beauty we never see at all. Thanks for this! Nature is lush!!
@MikeBolam Superb photo. Thanks for posting. When out in the wilds I often have a UV torch with me because so many organisms flouresce with lovely colours like this.

@MikeBolam would wear if this was a printed fabric.

Good work! Lovely pic.

@MikeBolam That looks magnificent! Amazing work!
@MikeBolam Very cool image Mike. I have just finished a ten-week lichen identification course and now I have a UV torch I'll be trying this myself - thanks for the inspiration!
@MikeBolam Love natural rock formations and monolithic stones.
@MikeBolam so cool. If I could boost this more than once....
@MikeBolam Cool! Beautiful photo.

Lichens aren’t bioluminescent, which is to say that if you turn out the lights, they won’t glow in the dark. Under ultraviolet light, however, many of them fluoresce, glowing vividly in ways that most humans can’t detect in normal daylight conditions.

Fluorescent Lichens: Dazzling Creatures of Light - Canadian Museum of Nature

Ever seen a fluorescent lichen? They can be found across Canada, and—thanks to a recent collecting trip by botanist Jennifer Doubt—they can also be seen in the museum.
