Cautious on police reform, Becerra risks losing progressives — and his political future

California Atty. Gen. Xavier Becerra has tried to walk a fine line amid the Black Lives Matter protests, portraying himself as both a civil rights defender and a friend of law enforcement. Critics say he's become too cautious on police use of force, including in the Stephon Clark case.

Los Angeles Times

I'm done with Democrats that want civil rights and accountability for everyone except the police.

Xavier Becerra is wrong to fight release of police officers' crimes

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra seeks to claw back records of police misconduct obtained by investigative reporters from public records requests.

CalMatters

"Yelled at a staffer" vs "fought the release of police misconduct records," is not a close contest for me.

No, I'm not saying that it's OK for a politician to treat their staff badly. I'm saying that y'all are sexist for acting like she's the meanest person in politics.

Biden has a profane temper behind closed doors: report

President Biden has a profane temper behind closed doors that contrasts with his folksy, affable public demeanor, according to a report. Axios reports that, according to current and former aides, the president has a short fuse and is prone to eruptions such as, “God dammit, how the f–k don’t you know this?!” and “Get the…

LOL!

Yeah, no thanks.

RIP Stephon Clark.

So disappointing.

"The attorney general’s actions on law enforcement issues have frustrated some people who supported his election last year, including civil rights attorney John Burris, who represented Rodney King in his civil rights lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department.

“I’m disappointed,” Burris said after Becerra’s announcement in the Stephon Clark case. “I supported him wholeheartedly [during the election]. I think I had higher hopes for him in the beginning.”

Burris said he has asked Becerra in the last few years to look at other police shootings and the attorney general has always sided with the local district attorneys in not pursuing action against officers."

@mekkaokereke boooohooohooo poor little piggies face scrutiny.

Not even consequences but scrutiny. What the fuck.

@mekkaokereke Shit, I dropped my tiny violin, which I use to serenade all the government officials indemnified by the state for mistakes made at work.
@mekkaokereke makes me think of the father claiming to the child “this will hurt me more than you”

@scanner @mekkaokereke

Ah yes, the sting of moral injury. Actually that doesn't hurt unless you have an actual conscience, which is kinda incompatible with the job. They're not hurt, they're mad.

@mekkaokereke That's disgusting.

My god.

"We're traumatized by all of you noticing we racism-shot someone again."

I don't how a person's mind gets this warped. Racism is a pathology.

@mekkaokereke
COPS SHOULD ALWAYS BE UNDER A MICROSCOPE. THAT'S ONE OF THE NATURAL COSTS OF BEING GIVEN THE POWER OF LIFE AND DEATH OVER OTHERS. QUIT YOUR JOB IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT.
@mekkaokereke
at what point do we pursue alternative means of justice when the systems that are allegedly meant to provide it refuse to do so?
how do we begin to compete with a monopoly on the legitimate use of violence?
@mekkaokereke Same thing happened to Amy Klobuchar, which also pissed me off then. And Porter is more progressive, IMO. I want her running this blue state.

@spiegelmama @mekkaokereke methinks the problem is the ridiculously enormous political consulting apparatus that serves democrats. seems like most progressives that get elected try to tack more towards the moderate side of the party once they’ve won election and want to get reelected.

I understand many sell out (Sinema) but I can’t imagine the paydays are quite so lucrative outside of Congress, so why abandon your base that put you there in the first place? Does no one have principles they live by anymore?

I can’t remember the quote, so I’m gonna butcher my paraphrase of it, but, “I’d rather have enemies than none. It means I’ve lived a principled life.”

@mekkaokereke Police are paid by taxpayers, who damn well have a right to know who is walking their streets with guns and authority to wield. Who wants cops with rap sheets?
@CStamp @mekkaokereke Retrograde Republicans and Ponzi Reformers including those wearing Democratic and Labour masks? #USpol #UKpol
@mekkaokereke *Sigh* I was warming up to Becerra because he seemed to have a good record elsewhere. Funny how this subject never seems to come up in the interviews. 🙄
@mekkaokereke cop fellating politicians are the worst scumbags. They lack the spine to even own their bigotry
