If you or someone you know has an account on mastodon.cloud, I would highly recommend migrating to a new server. Lots of instances are in the process of completely blocking mastodon.cloud which will sever all connections for people on mastodon.cloud. Mastodon.cloud is effectively abandoned, running very old and out of date software with minimal moderation resulting in a good deal of moderation work for those of us running other instances.

I am posting this in hopes that some people on mastodon.cloud see it and decide to take action.

@jerry mastodon.cloud was my first instance, 9 years ago …
@jernej__s it started out good, but they got bought by the pawoo people and I think their attention is elsewhere in the crypto world now.
@jerry Yeah, I remember reading about that.
@jerry @jernej__s dare I ask what pawoo is...
@noodlemaz @jerry @jernej__s Yeah, my first reaction was "Wait, were The Pawoo People part of the Iroquois Confederacy?" until I read on and realised it was probably a startup name.
@noodlemaz @jernej__s do you know what loli is?
@jerry @jernej__s I feel like I'm being trolled 😅
@noodlemaz @jernej__s basically animated child porn. I’m sure some people may disagree with that description, but that’s what it looks like to me.
@jerry @noodlemaz @jernej__s Pawoo got defederated by most of the Fediverse when they became a hotbed of real CSAM due to lack of moderation.
@jerry ok thanks for the helpful notice... Now to figure a destination 🚌
@buddhabuddy @jerry I have two accounts.... this one, which seems fairly standard 500 character Mastodon and...

@jerry ... this one if I need more than 500 characters.

Both are well moderated instances as far as I can tell.

@rozeboosje @jerry @buddhabuddy I thought I had replied to my previous comment with my fedi.at account but it ended up separated from the reply thread. Apologies.

masto.ai is not "AI", it's maintained by @stux . fedi.at is an Austrian server but I liked the way it sounded and it does welcome toots in English so all good.

@jerry I've seen the announcement from Fosstodon yesterday, and I saw this one from Floss.social earlier today.

Do you plan on taking any action regarding mastodon.cloud on infosec?

@mike I keep hoping that instance gets handed off and doesn’t need to be suspended. I’ve had it limited for a long time, but it’s not enough to prevent the recent nonsense coming from them. So yes, at some point I will suspend them.
@jerry Ooof, trying to clean up that instance after this much neglect would be a massive undertaking. There's almost 280000 accounts there and a fraction of a percent active. Not saying it can't be done, just that I wouldn't want to be the one to try.

@mike @jerry
Yikes. That goes way beyond manual pruning and into database surgery. Multiple rounds of backups and testing. It would likely take at least a week, probably more to make sure nothing breaks.

No, thank you. Let it burn.

@abr @clayton_oneill @mahtin
Making sure you've seen this.
@wesgeorge thanks! I’ll see if I can get moved somewhere else.
@wesgeorge @abr @mahtin I really appreciate you pointing this out. Aside from the problems cited, it's also apparnetly falling over most of the time. I'm having a hard time even moving things.
@jasongorman re defederation of mastodon.cloud
@jerry I had a similar experience with qoto.org.
@modrobert I didn’t realize qoto was having issues. Then again, I hadn’t heard much about them in a very long time.
@jerry Yes, abandoned, last admin post in 2024, lots of error 500 when using. The final straw which made me move was when my profile couldn't be viewed, get error, same problem for others I tested; e.g. https://qoto.org/@barefootstache , one of the listed admins. I'm suspecting the server is running out of disk space for certain data, or similar problem.
@modrobert yeah, that’s not a great sign for sure
@modrobert @jerry QOTO's whole purpose was being a cult of "sea-lioning as a path to self-actualization".
@dalias @jerry The scientific method? Anyway, I noticed shortly after joining that some pushed the "If we don't believe in free expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all" mantra hard sometimes which led to blocking on several other servers, but these were problems while the website still worked without errors, which it hasn't for the past year or so.
@jerry Thank you for this. I had been meaning to move servers, but didn't know it was this bad.
@jerry Does Mastodon have any way to search your follows/followers lists for users on a particular instance? If so, instructions on how to do that would help people reach out to their contacts about the need to move. Most of us probably don't even know if we have followers from dot cloud.
@dalias @jerry In settings you can export followers or follows as csv files you can then search.

@dalias You can look at the directory of every instance: https://mastodon.cloud/directory - always: instance-name / directory

@jerry

mastodon.cloud

Everyone is welcome as long as you follow our code of conduct! Thank you. Mastodon.cloud is maintained by Sujitech, LLC.

Mastodon hosted on mastodon.cloud
@NatureMC @jerry Huh? That has nothing to do with the question afaict.

@dalias Sorry, I misunderstood your question! I didn't pay attention to that part "your follows/followers list".

@jerry

@masek Their official account seems to be @netzpolitik_feed - their mastodon.cloud account is already invisible for me.

@jerry @netzpolitik_org

@jerry @hoakleytechbot @slashdot

Consider moving guys. What you post is important.

@jerry
Is there a way for a single user to proactively "defederate"/"ban" the server for himself?

I am pretty new to the mastodon/fediverse and am still getting the hang of it.

@jerry
Kinda managed to answer my own question, but for other people interested:
You go to any account at the chosen instance, and there are user options "block/mute" etc. One of the options is to block/mute the whole instance.
@jerry does mastodon give you the tools to auto defederate servers that are below a minimum Version?
@jerry at 26d and counting … its unlikely :/
