one of my 2026 MSQ (main scenario quests):
Exit #proton πŸ˜„

Over the years there is just too much shady stuff going on. Every now and then they pull off something that makes me lose trust and I feel like everything is going into the wrong direction. Also I just feel like I don't want to put all eggs into one basket. Currently I use these services provided by Proton:
- email
- VPN
- Password-manager
- Their cute little AI chatbot πŸ˜…

Why am I using proton? When I degoogled in 2023, the combo of Proton + Nextcloud was a very easy route to quickly get out of the Google Ecosystem.

Since I have already migrated once, I don't feel like this is going to be a huge deal.

What I basically have to do: find alternative services, set them up, flip the switch.

VPN is easy -> #mullvad 🀩

Passwordmanager is an interesting part: I plan to use #keepassxc in combination with #syncthing. Ideally my phone and laptop will sync the vault, and my laptop will also create a synced backup with Nextcloud.
One thing I started using excessively over the last 2 years is the aliases feature of #protonpass . Not sure how I will untangle that πŸ˜… I really like the idea to have throwaway-email addresses for different websites and being able to answer incoming mails without leaking my real email address.

the email inbox itself will be a process over months but I already migrated away from gmail and I know the process and this time it doesn't feel daunting at all. My way of migrating email is updating the mail address on a handful of services every now and then, use both email inboxes for a while and after a couple of months I should know if everything has been migrated.

Ah lets see where it goes 😊 Step one, as usual: familiarizing myself and gathering information. I'm checking out Keepass now 😎

#protonmail #protonvpn #passwordmanager #foss #degoogle

@realestninja What's this "shay stuff" going on with proton?

@MuhammadFreeSoftware I didn't keep notes but it is just a feeling that grows over time when things are being exposed now and then. at some point there are too many and I get the feeling that I want something more peaceful.

from the tip of my head: the back and forth with the CEO supporting trump, the marketing and PR that can be dissected and then clearly shows dark patterns. for example the whole "we are under swiss jurisdiction, trust me bro" which seems to be the entire business model. relocating the company can remove that "feature" any time.

there was a blog article the other day

@realestninja @MuhammadFreeSoftware yeah I agree the negatives are building up. The "supporting Trump" thing was a furfy, tho - the inability of many ppl in the US to hold more than 2 thoughts at once. But the latest one, the zero knowledge claim revealed to be untrue, is def a worry.

BTW, re the email aliases, I use Simplelogin, which I think is part-owned by Proton but a separate company and I use it standalone - I've been user since before Proton

@adb @realestninja @MuhammadFreeSoftware yeah, absolutely shady stuff. Almost feels like a targeted campaign in the press and in the "influencerternet".

@realestninja for the multiple email aliases, I've been using an email forwarder service from mythic beasts [1]. I can now send to [email protected] and it will get forwarded to [email protected]

@JonTheNiceGuy can you also respond to such received mails? Will it also forward back but change the original sender to the in-between address?
@realestninja no, but you can setup your mail to send as whatever you wish via the SMTPd. Not quite as straightforward, but doable.
