The reason why the Artemis mission has everyone so fascinated is because it is a showcase for the efforts of people who are very, very good at their jobs, at a time when the news cycle is dominated by people who are not merely terrible at their jobs, but awful human beings as well.
@angusm that incompetence permeates culture in the US. every where we turn there's someone doing their job poorly.
@angusm The new coined term is β€œcompetence porn”
@farah @angusm
Yes! I was listening to a podcast and they were talking about the movie Project Hail Mary, and this is what they said about that movie: it was fun because it was COMPETENCE PORN! And I love that. πŸ˜€

@farah @angusm

Hahaha I came here to say this too! 🀣
Its a shame the furver is matched by flat earthers talking about jelled hair fake news. (I hate this timeline) πŸ˜’

@farah How new are we talking? I recall seeing it 10+ years ago in a discussion lamenting the loss of competence porn as a TV/movie metagenre in favour of hapless protagonists and an overall growing distrust in scientists and scholars. From some of the other replies here, it seems like it's coming back as a thing in media, I'm glad :D
@angusm Also people working together for a shared goal instead of grifting for themselves.
@DeeLux_Fiat @angusm just an unnecessary goal for humankind in 2026 there are such others urgent, vital needs for the Humanity, so not sure this mission is a proof of intelligence

@greenman @DeeLux_Fiat @angusm

Science doesn't always have immediate payoffs, that's not a reason not to do it. NASA has an extremely modest budget compared to other areas (military especially). Instead of griping about peaceful space exploration we should fix that military waste first and then see where we're at.

@contrasocial @greenman @DeeLux_Fiat @angusm I might add that we still are working on fossil fuels when renewable energy is now completly viable in a million different ways.
In USA this is more evident when you look at the extensions of corn fields used purely for methane extraction, by law, instead of modernizing the concept to solar panels.
Screaming to the air for such a minor (yet cool) thing seems pointless.
Burn a weapons factory if you're in USA, that's more productive.

@angusm

Competence, and international cooperation on display.

@angusm Additionally, all of the good capable ones, behind the scenes, will be shoot in a leg, to be sure they don't make it again.

@angusm

everything elon builds explodes or catches fire

and everything he does costs massively more to actually fail and that money comes from taxpayers

@angusm It was really nice to see a well planned and executed project. There were so many people and components involved that worked together the way they were designed to. It was so different from what we are used to seeing in this world today.
@angusm You hit the nail on the head with that! I have a strong filter in place for dominant news cycles, and Artemis II passes through that filter cleanly!
@angusm shows that civil servants don’t have to be the enemy
@angusm I was slightly surprised at the recovery method, which required the astronauts to mess around in rubber dinghies rather than have the capsule hoisted aboard a ship as is done for Dragon.
@angusm it was a distraction. Why did they even do this?

"La razΓ³n por la que la misiΓ³n Artemis tiene a todo el mundo tan fascinado es que constituye una muestra de los esfuerzos de personas que son muy, muy buenas en su trabajo, en un momento en que el ciclo de noticias estΓ‘ dominado por personas que no solo son pΓ©simas en sus empleos, sino tambiΓ©n seres humanos detestables."

@angusm

@angusm
I've seen plenty of people who were good at their jobs and also not good human beings.
@angusm space exploration shows us what we are truly capable of

@angusm

Spot on indeed…

@angusm

And their rocket didn't even blow up once

@angusm Everyone? Really?

For me, it's just yet more boys (and token girls) with obscenely expensive toys, gobbling up vast amounts of resources for a joyride and for research which will enable huge lots iof evil.

@2legged @angusm We really gonna diminish Christina Koch's career as an astronaut and engineer by calling her a token?

Really??? Come the fuck on.

@himbovoorhees My only concern about anyone's career as an astronaut is to wish that they stay on earth.

The whole obscene waste remains male-dominated, tho that's only a tiny part of my anger and revulsion at the whole show. But if people wanna do these stunts, there's no excuse for gender imbalance.

I just wish the whole lot of them would be banned from orbital thrillseking, and given a good trouting before going off to be useful, like disabling ICBMs or becoming human shields.

@angusm

@2legged Becoming human shields? Really? Yeah, better use of the "token girl" to take a bullet for someone else than when she set records with other female astronauts. If we don't like her achievements or expertise, we can just diminish them and write them off! That's the real feminism!

I think it's entirely possible to do both space and other things, but unfortunately the government is not currently interested in other things. The space program essentially being mostly dead for the past couple decades didn't make a difference on those, either.

@himbovoorhees You still miss my point. The space program is not just an obscene waste of resources. It is part of the a technological exercise which has turned space into a new theatre of war. It is a dangerous and wicked thing, which should be ended.

These people who have been falsely glorified while they damage humanity's future could redeem themselves by following the heroic example of Rachel Corrie. They could place their bodies in service of human life instead of technological ego trips

@himbovoorhees And BTW, I don't give a flying fook about anyone in any field "setting records". That's just ego-tripping for the media age.
@2legged @himbovoorhees damn someone sounds like they have the intent to kill the USA president but not the guts huh?
Tbh seeing something on public domain just being able to happen in a country like USA seems like a miracle nowdays.No matter how over-zealous we may be about dumb waste of resources
I can think at least of a few hundred more worrying matters that englobe everything you've listed that are both worse and more opulent and purely individualistic in gains
Have a chill or kill the rich

@Nawer_Rapter I do hope that you are on drugs. Because if you aren't high on hallucinogens, your delusional claim that I want to kill anyone is unexcused.

@himbovoorhees

@2legged @himbovoorhees damn you wouldn't even press the button then?
So much anger for so little possiblilities, better to be chill about It then.
@angusm It has gotten people in Houston excited about space travel in a way we haven't been able to be in such a long time - and it wasn't even launched here. Even a lot of the "space program" stuff we've seen in the past decade has been either SpaceX exploding test ships or 100% commercial for profit. It's nice seeing folks just so amazed and delighted by trained personnel going to space and acknowledging the work they put in, and the history of people who went up before them. Especially the people too young to have "Challenger trauma", even secondhand. They got to watch this mission and just enjoy something for once that wasn't war or hate or other trash.
Artemis II Is Competency Porn and We Are Starving For It

girls will be like i needed this and it's just four nerds in space.

Airplane Mode with Liz Plank
@angusm Actually, it is so much about competence as it is about missing the collective pride we once felt in our country.
@angusm and the hyper marketing of LLMs to replace skilled humans.
@angusm I totally forgot to look at the moon while it was happening. Oh well, next one.
@angusm thank you for putting into words what we're all feeling.
