It is iconic for tourists, but for many Parisians, it is a symbol of oppression & hate.

Its size, location & white stone make it prominent but this was a deliberate choice made by the far-right gouvernement at the time.

They wanted to build a highly visible monument as a reminder of the defeat of the 1871 Commune.

They chose to build it on Montmartre as this is where the Commune had started.

After slaughtering 1,000s of Communards, the reactionary govt decided to further humiliate the survivors by building this huge church as the symbol of the victory of the Versaillais over the insurrectionists of the Commune.

Long live the Commune !
