picture from artemis 2's exterior camera - the closer it gets to earth the more it looks like actually quite good sfx? which is hilarious because it's real

#artemis #artemis2 #space #moon

oo, they backed the camera out some more

#artemis #artemis2 #moon #space

"...I think you're right. Full reverse - Chewie, lock in the auxiliary power!"

whelp here's the "NASA PR0VES E4RTH IS FL/-\T!" photo that the nutters'll be using for the next 10 years

#nasa #ohHereWeGo #artemis #Artemis2

y'know it seems wasteful not to reuse more of these ships but otoh I know I wouldn't buy a vehicle with 700,000 miles on the odometer so

oh that night that john p murtha died is a night i'll never forget

#artemis #artemis2

just under a minute to separation

#artemis #artemis2 #nasa

expecting to hear "THIS IS THE VOICE OF THE MYSTERONS" during the blackout period

ffft, stupid satphones don't work for astronauts either

can't even leave voicemail, not that anybody checks voicemail

@moira

update, they just announced a slight refinement to the times:

Splashdown at 7:07 and 27 sec pm Central time for a mission length of 9 d 1 hr 32 min 15 sec

@moira Airborne camera tracking was so good even before the 1st drogue β€˜chute deployments
@moira it's night-time here and that turned the room into an Integrity Disco!
@moira The blast shield, the blast shield! It goes down and it goes up! BLAST SHIELD!
@moira That was a sporty roll re-position on initial entry
@moira I wonder what's causing the distortion in the lower left that makes Earth look like it's got a big hump
@moira I think we got your Mysterons during whatever that strobing IR vortex view was.
@moira
Integrity: are you...my home?
LORGE EARTH: YES COME HOME FOR LORGE HUGS
@wordsmith [V'ger BROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM]

@moira
Hurtling at Earth at unbelievable speeds, the astronauts prepare to get dunked in the ocean then have a nice greeting from the navy...

I swear the planet gets bigger every time I glance at the video.

@realtegan YEAH

tiny dot 'til you're right up at it then O HELO

@moira Well, I'm glad we've finally got proof.

Took long enough.

@apLundell if we're lucky they'll start arguing about the giant hinge that obviously must be in this photo if you dig in far enough
@moira Fund my kickstarter to charter a ship and find The Great Hinge!
@apLundell GIANT HINGE THEORY CONFIRMED
@moira both flat *and* smooshed. I knew it all along!

@moira I believe the view is optically fixed, but whenever the SAW rotates to face the panels to the Sun (or when the craft's attitude changes) the camera view changes as well.

In this case I think it's a combination of both, the spacecraft rotated (thermal control?) but the panel orientation would have stayed about the same, so there was a rotation relative to the capsule/service module

@moira It certainly feels like it was directed by Gerry Anderson.

@RobynGoodfellow fuck, you're right

that's hilarious xD

space: 1999 real never please because that's bad xD

@RobynGoodfellow @moira

I, for one, am looking forward to the debriefing in the Big Ominous Room:

WHY DID YOU TURN BACK??
we didn't...
WHY DID YOU TURN BACK??
can't you assholes check the flight recorder?
Burned up in the crash.
Aren't they designed to not do that?
Not in this movie. Also really bad crash.
Well, Copilot Guy can corroborate everything
Too bad he's dead from 3rd-degree burns and shit + wrong side heart wtf
And Britain RH drive?
We switched right before UFO, how do you not remember?

also look forward to the ending where the insufficiently-reversed-polarity lander destroys entire SpaceX base + HQ, nobody kept offsite backups of anything,
so only Elon remembers + nobody believes him => confined to an insane asylum

@wrog @RobynGoodfellow are you threatening me with a bad movie or a good time, because I can't tell

@moira @RobynGoodfellow

#monsterdon definitely needs to do
Journey to the Far Side of the Sun

@moira @RobynGoodfellow

(you've seen this, right? Because, if you haven't then oh god....)

@wrog @RobynGoodfellow I don't know for sure? I feel like I have but I remember _nothing_.

@moira @RobynGoodfellow

it was their theatrical-movie attempt that made UFO possible (because lots of leftover sets/props they didn't have to build from scratch)

@wrog @RobynGoodfellow ooooh so if we see this we can play spot-the-UFO-prop?

I am more interested than previously xD

@moira @RobynGoodfellow

that particular drinking game is going to put you in a coma pretty quickly

@moira

You can tell it's real because it doesn't have as much greebles as sfx.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greeble

Greeble - Wikipedia

@jztusk I dunno, we are real close up on that section of ship

back the camera out and make it a bigger ship and it might be pretty similar

@jztusk @moira
Mind you, this isn't a normal special effects model. Not designed to be seen like this. It's mostly internally illuminated, and thousands of tiny, hand-drilled holes take the place of conventional greebles to give scale. Greebles are mostly located where they'll be back-lit by the internal lights.
@jztusk @moira I love that there’s a tiny R2D2 and C-3PO on that model.
