Just watched the 2 part ep of The Six Million Dollar Man - The Secret of Bigfoot and the 2 part ep of The Bionic Woman - Kill Oscar Goldman, the one that introduces the fembots. Needless to say both of these villains scared the bejezus out of me when I was a kid. 😱

Had all the toys though! I was also a member of the Steve Austin fan club. Had to send away and got a signed 8x10 glossy portrait of Lee Majors as Col Austin. šŸ¤“šŸ˜…šŸ‘

Since I was on a retro TV kick I picked a random ep of the old Emergency! series and boy it was awesome! A two-part ep from S7 that was like a mini disaster flick where they have to rescue office workers from a raging inferno high rise. Really impressive for a TV show from the 70’s. Hundreds of extras, tons of physical burning sets, and high drama.

The S7 ep also had a very familiar, very YOUNG John DeLancie, better known to us as Q from #StarTrek TNG. Impressive, Mon capitan!

Watched a few ep of Emergency! now and I have to say it’s kinda TV comfort food. Parts are hokey but other parts are super sincere and the leads are just well acted. Gage and DeSoto both are professionals w/ awesome bedside manners. They take pride in their job and their squad, it’s refreshing. 🚨

More fun things:
- Always checking the map before a run (No GPS!)
- Writing *everything* down (no tablets!)
- Have each other’s backs
- Rampart staff is a little stiff compared
- Animal rescues YAY!

Time for another episode of Emergency! Crazy how a show about life or death situations and people in dire need of help can be so relaxing but damn if it isn’t. The vibe back in the 70’s was just so removed from what it is today. If the ER on #ThePitt is running on steroids, the ER at Rampart General ran on gin and tonic.

So I asked ChatGPT what was the episode of #Emergency where Fireman John Gage was hit by a car. It gave me a long, dramatic answer citing S3 ep 19 called ā€œThe Hard Hoursā€. Went and read the description on Peacock and it said nothing about Gage being hit.

Then I googled the question and found it was actually S5 E22 ā€˜The Nuisance’.

I’m starting to think AI is a complicated plot by Google to make web searching relevant again.

Another classic show I watched growing up was #GilligansIsland I know every ep by heart & drove my mom crazy watching it šŸ˜…

Fav eps:

Pass the Vegitables Please - The castaways gain superpowers by eating radioactive veggies.

Mine Hero - Gilligan hauls in a WWII mine and they try to diffuse it before it blows up the island.

Seer Gilligan - The castaways discover seeds that let them read each other’s minds!

Gilligan’s Living Doll - A NASA robot lands & they put him to work + a possible rescue.

@gedeonm I once did the math, that I had probably seen them all about 7 times? Twice per school year, not watching in summer because no ā€˜after school’ appointment. 5 episodes a week 3/4 of the year, around 100 episodes produced total.

About the point I was sure I had seen them all about three times, I caught one I missed.

It had Richard Kiel and a lot of night shots, including a blue moon. Ghost a Go-Go. I forget the reason for Richard Kiel in cat burglar costume being on the island.

@gedeonm Marianne was my first tv crush.
@eurobubba Heh, you were not alone!! 😁
@gedeonm That was quite a show. I watched it when it was new on network television, no re-runs. Funny that it became so popular thanks to cable TV & its never-ending need to fill hours of TV time šŸ™‚

My wife and I were taking bets if Gage and DeSoto would have to defibrillate one of the victims in this tiny plane that crashed atop a tree deep in the forest 100 feet up. #Emergency

Yes/No?

When #Emergency is good it’s *really* good. I’m starting to understand why it became the smash hit it did with S2 E1 ā€˜Problem’.

DeSoto considers quitting being a paramedic after a quick decision in the field and the victim is lost. The ep culminates with a thrilling house fire where Roy goes in to find a boy and his dog and rescues both.

This is a *real* structure fire on a real street in LA. No CGI no back lot at universal. How they did it I dunno but it’s damned fine TV.

Another #StarTrek alum makes an appearance on #Emergency S2 E5, this time it’s William Campbell from Trek TOS, better known as Trelayne from The Squire of Gothos. šŸ––

Campbell plays a drunk driver who plows into a little seven year old girl and puts her in critical condition for most of the episode. Despicable doesn’t do his performance justice. Of course this is #RetroTV and she finally recovers in the end thank goodness. šŸ™

One of the more harrowing rescues from S2 of Emergency! Guy was being chased by police and went over a freeway overpass and became trapped, sustained head injury. Pretty great, realistic rescue too, the show continues to impress me. #Emergency #RetroTV

Just crazy the stars you run into when watching old TV shows like #Emergency.

She’s only on screen for like a minute and her appearance in S2 E10 ā€˜Dinner Date’ is uncredited but this is a very very young Melissa Gilbert.

It might be her very first TV appearance, I’m not sure. This was in 1972, two years before the premiere of Little House on the Prairie in ā€˜74. I almost missed her completely! #RetroTV

They drink A LOT of coffee on #Emergency. No joke. Between Brackett, DeSoto, Gage, Chet, Dixie, Dr Early and the rest they keep the entire columbian coffee syndicate in spades. #RetroTV

How times change! Gage and DeSoto rescue a child locked in a hot car at a shopping plaza who’s been trapped for an hour unattended.

They get him out and he seems to be okay thankfully and the child’s mom comes running out from a hair salon not to thank them but to berate them for breaking into her car without permission.

I was SURE they would call a cop to arrest her and take the kid but nope! They hand the boy back and apologize and go on their merry way.

1973, BABY!! 😱 #Emergency #RetroTV

KMG-365
@tompeterson Heh I’ve taken to repeating this on every single call when they go out on the show. It’s so much fun.
@gedeonm
When I was a kid I always wanted a phone that rang with the sound of the red line from the Flint movies. My iPhone 3G was my first cell phone, and the first two ringtones I created were the Flint ring and the Station 51 tone. Even though my wife politely declined that I use the Flint ring for her ringtone, I still carry both on my phone to this day.
@gedeonm the lieutenant at my first station assignment gave me the first rule of the firehouse: ā€œalways make sure there is a pot of coffee. If it’s empty, make coffee. If it’s low, make more coffee. As the rookie on the crew this is your first housekeeping duty.ā€
That has been true of every station I have ever been in, there is ALWAYS coffee & the rook better keep on top of it.
@gedeonm Little Firehouse on the Prairie.
@gedeonm ā€œif you go to Pra’ire, you will dieā€
@gedeonm Sorry if you posted this before but what service are you watching this on? https://www.justwatch.com/us/tv-show/emergency doesn’t show any availability other than buying by the season.

@BillSaysThis I’m watching on Peacock streaming.
@gedeonm You’re making me want to rewatch the show…
@gedeonm I'm guessing YES, right before starting an IV with D5W.
@gedeonm I wonder what its response would be if you threw the facts back at it and asked why it screwed up a simple web search? :-)

@gedeonm

Such questions have mistakenly veered towards more popular (but wrong) episodes for years.

@gedeonm weird, because when I ask it, it gives the correct answer:

The episode you’re thinking of is:
šŸ‘‰
ā€œThe Nuisanceā€
(Season 5, Episode 22) of
Emergency!

@sunsetandlabrea I think this probably demonstrates the problem in that it’s so untrustworthy that it gives different responses depending on when and how you ask the question.

Here’s the screenshot of my actual query. And I actually gave it more credibility than I should have because it didn’t actually suggest the episode I said it did. S3 E 18 is called ā€˜How green was my thumb?’ not ā€˜The World of Hurt’. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

@gedeonm although you asked for John Cage, presumably a transcription error. Regardless I just tried asking for John Cage too, and it gets it right but possibly with less confidence!
@gedeonm I guess you should check out Schwarzwaldklinik, German 1980s hospital soap. Can’t get through 5 minutes of it. https://youtu.be/k0uvOaC4cTQ

@timo Wow! That’s the most beautiful locale for a hospital I’ve ever seen! This looks fun.
@gedeonm the life/death situations are relaxing to watch because you know they would always get resolved at the end of the episode. Or, at worst, getting past a cliffhanger with resolution at the end of the second episode.
@gedeonm ha we're both rewatching ER shows, you went for a much older show than me tho! never even heard of this one before haha i've been enjoying ER so far
@manolo ER is the better show for sure and set the bar for all modern medical shows. I watched Emergecy! Growing up as a kid but don’t remember any of the stories, only the characters so it’s been fun getting to know them all over again. Keep us posted where you are in ER!
@gedeonm i'm making progress fast šŸ˜‚ i thought i was in season 2 but i'm almost done with season 3!
@manolo @gedeonm I’ve been watching ER since October. In the original run I quit at season 3 or 4, so it’s been interesting to see what happened after I left. A big one: cell phones! All of them were still using pagers at the beginning.
@mjibrower @gedeonm yes! hahaha i just saw the cellphone episode yesterday, so funny to see the reaction when carter is using it šŸ˜‚
@mjibrower @gedeonm omg they got a freaking tamagotchi now!! šŸ˜‚
@gedeonm Where are you getting episodes? It was on Tubi but seems gone now. I’ve been thinking I want to watch.
@leebennett it’s on Peacock streaming.
@gedeonm I loved Emergency!
@michaelgemar Yep it was weekly family watching in our home for years. Good stuff!
@gedeonm ā€œGive ā€˜em D5W with Ringers Lactate!ā€
@michaelgemar @gedeonm And transport immediately.

@chertridge @michaelgemar see, this is why I called Emergency! TV comfort food. There’s a predictability in every emergency call. They show them heading out, arriving, assessing the scene, getting the patient’s vitals and calling it in. And that part is pretty much all the same every time. It’s like a little dramatic ritual and it’s fun and comforting to me.

Plus now I know what the hell ringers lactate is! šŸ¤“šŸ˜…

@gedeonm @chertridge There’s also a lot to be said in watching competent people do a good job.
@michaelgemar @chertridge Total truth. One of the reasons why I loved #StarTrek TNG. Best of the best.
@gedeonm I loved that show when I was a kid.

@gedeonm watch this next - totally forgot about it

@kevinbhayes OMG! I didn’t even know there was one… I think. Gonna have to look that up. Wow.

@gedeonm

I mean… you can’t watch this without also watching Adam 12

@philsplace Yes! They were actually in the Emergency! pilot which was very cool.
