Just watched the 2 part ep of The Six Million Dollar Man - The Secret of Bigfoot and the 2 part ep of The Bionic Woman - Kill Oscar Goldman, the one that introduces the fembots. Needless to say both of these villains scared the bejezus out of me when I was a kid. 😱

Had all the toys though! I was also a member of the Steve Austin fan club. Had to send away and got a signed 8x10 glossy portrait of Lee Majors as Col Austin. šŸ¤“šŸ˜…šŸ‘

Since I was on a retro TV kick I picked a random ep of the old Emergency! series and boy it was awesome! A two-part ep from S7 that was like a mini disaster flick where they have to rescue office workers from a raging inferno high rise. Really impressive for a TV show from the 70’s. Hundreds of extras, tons of physical burning sets, and high drama.

The S7 ep also had a very familiar, very YOUNG John DeLancie, better known to us as Q from #StarTrek TNG. Impressive, Mon capitan!

Watched a few ep of Emergency! now and I have to say it’s kinda TV comfort food. Parts are hokey but other parts are super sincere and the leads are just well acted. Gage and DeSoto both are professionals w/ awesome bedside manners. They take pride in their job and their squad, it’s refreshing. 🚨

More fun things:
- Always checking the map before a run (No GPS!)
- Writing *everything* down (no tablets!)
- Have each other’s backs
- Rampart staff is a little stiff compared
- Animal rescues YAY!

Time for another episode of Emergency! Crazy how a show about life or death situations and people in dire need of help can be so relaxing but damn if it isn’t. The vibe back in the 70’s was just so removed from what it is today. If the ER on #ThePitt is running on steroids, the ER at Rampart General ran on gin and tonic.

So I asked ChatGPT what was the episode of #Emergency where Fireman John Gage was hit by a car. It gave me a long, dramatic answer citing S3 ep 19 called ā€œThe Hard Hoursā€. Went and read the description on Peacock and it said nothing about Gage being hit.

Then I googled the question and found it was actually S5 E22 ā€˜The Nuisance’.

I’m starting to think AI is a complicated plot by Google to make web searching relevant again.

@gedeonm I wonder what its response would be if you threw the facts back at it and asked why it screwed up a simple web search? :-)

@gedeonm

Such questions have mistakenly veered towards more popular (but wrong) episodes for years.

@gedeonm weird, because when I ask it, it gives the correct answer:

The episode you’re thinking of is:
šŸ‘‰
ā€œThe Nuisanceā€
(Season 5, Episode 22) of
Emergency!

@gedeonm I guess you should check out Schwarzwaldklinik, German 1980s hospital soap. Can’t get through 5 minutes of it. https://youtu.be/k0uvOaC4cTQ

@timo Wow! That’s the most beautiful locale for a hospital I’ve ever seen! This looks fun.
@gedeonm the life/death situations are relaxing to watch because you know they would always get resolved at the end of the episode. Or, at worst, getting past a cliffhanger with resolution at the end of the second episode.
@gedeonm ha we're both rewatching ER shows, you went for a much older show than me tho! never even heard of this one before haha i've been enjoying ER so far
@manolo ER is the better show for sure and set the bar for all modern medical shows. I watched Emergecy! Growing up as a kid but don’t remember any of the stories, only the characters so it’s been fun getting to know them all over again. Keep us posted where you are in ER!
@gedeonm i'm making progress fast šŸ˜‚ i thought i was in season 2 but i'm almost done with season 3!
@manolo @gedeonm I’ve been watching ER since October. In the original run I quit at season 3 or 4, so it’s been interesting to see what happened after I left. A big one: cell phones! All of them were still using pagers at the beginning.
@mjibrower @gedeonm yes! hahaha i just saw the cellphone episode yesterday, so funny to see the reaction when carter is using it šŸ˜‚
@mjibrower @gedeonm omg they got a freaking tamagotchi now!! šŸ˜‚
@gedeonm Where are you getting episodes? It was on Tubi but seems gone now. I’ve been thinking I want to watch.
@leebennett it’s on Peacock streaming.
@gedeonm I loved Emergency!
@michaelgemar Yep it was weekly family watching in our home for years. Good stuff!
@gedeonm ā€œGive ā€˜em D5W with Ringers Lactate!ā€
@michaelgemar @gedeonm And transport immediately.

@chertridge @michaelgemar see, this is why I called Emergency! TV comfort food. There’s a predictability in every emergency call. They show them heading out, arriving, assessing the scene, getting the patient’s vitals and calling it in. And that part is pretty much all the same every time. It’s like a little dramatic ritual and it’s fun and comforting to me.

Plus now I know what the hell ringers lactate is! šŸ¤“šŸ˜…

@gedeonm @chertridge There’s also a lot to be said in watching competent people do a good job.
@michaelgemar @chertridge Total truth. One of the reasons why I loved #StarTrek TNG. Best of the best.
@gedeonm I loved that show when I was a kid.

@gedeonm watch this next - totally forgot about it

@bgrinter Wow…. So did I. My brain just broke. Fun!

@gedeonm Loved that show! I even had the Emergency! board game.
@kevinbhayes OMG! I didn’t even know there was one… I think. Gonna have to look that up. Wow.

@gedeonm

I mean… you can’t watch this without also watching Adam 12

@philsplace Yes! They were actually in the Emergency! pilot which was very cool.
@gedeonm I like the giant ashtray
@az Hahaha! Totally didn’t catch that before. Bravo! šŸ˜…

@gedeonm A few days ago I re-downloaded Quantum Conundrum - a physics-based Portal-like puzzle platformer with John as narrator and quirky mad scientist. 😁

Although I played and finished it already years ago after it's initial release, I had to buy it again on Steam, simply because its really noticeable that John put a lot of heart and soul into it. 😊

@shinydelight Aaaw that’s cool!
@gedeonm Also in terms of videogames...back in days of Assassin's Creed Revelations...my canadian colleagues managed to cast John as the father of Desmond Miles. Suffice it to say, I was very pleased as soon as I learned that back then. I have to admit I had a bit of fanboy moment back then. 🄰

@gedeonm I loved this show!

Made the pilgrimage in 2013

Friend of mine became a paramedic because of his childhood love of the show

@bgrinter that’s awesome! Yep Emergency! Was a family favorite growing up. I may have to go back and watch more episodes because the one I watched last night was just amazingly well done for the day. Loved the leads and the docs at Rampart too.
@gedeonm massive plaque on the wall told the story behind the show too
@bgrinter That’s wonderful! Didn’t know any of this. I’m gonna have to go back and watch the pilot now. Thank you!!

@bgrinter @gedeonm

Did he pitch the concept to Jack Webb instead of it being assigned?

@bgrinter @gedeonm I always regretted never finding this location the few times I visited SoCal so long ago. So Google Earth touring has been my only recourse.

The hospital that represented Rampart isn't far away.

@leebennett @bgrinter Man that’s cool. Amazing the hospital looks basically the same as it did. Thanks for that!

@gedeonm Ever since I bought an old 3Dconnexion navigator knob, I have LONG enjoyed flying around doing Google Earth sightseeing. So much fun. So many awesome things to find.

I just hope Google eventually updates the native app coz it's still Rosetta. I fear they're migrating to the web view which may have the same imagery, but the navigation and pro features just aren't as good.

@gedeonm I loved watching Emergency! I had a big crush on Dr Brackett. šŸ’•
@Linnefaulk šŸ˜šŸ‘šŸ¤“
@gedeonm I saw both Westworld and Live and Let Die WAY WAY too young. I was terrified of men with hooks for hands and of course the melted face Yul Brynner. 70s #GenX kids. I tell ya.
@gedeonm Okay that’s wild. No memory of Bigfoot on 6MDM, and I couldn’t have told you about the fembots on BW, but I definitely at least caught a scene coz your picture dredged up a distinct memory. Never knew before now that’s where I saw them.
@gedeonm I loved both series as a teenager, too. We got them in Germany about ten years after they aired in the U.S., but it was futuristic enough that this didn't matter much. I loved the nerd factor this series had, and also loved the action and occasional drama. That "bionic sound" still makes me smile when I encounter it today somewhere.
@marco One of the greatest sound effects of all time!
@gedeonm @marco I always, even as an impressionable kid in the 70’s, thought $6M was actually really cheap for what they did. This is not an American medical costs thing; I mean this purely as a sort of bang-for-buck analysis, not that I had those words available to me back then. It’s less than $45M in today’s USD.
@gedeonm Are the two series actually anywhere on streaming, or do you have recordings of the old shows so you can rewatch them? Would love to listen to some of the old episodes just for nostalgic fun. And because they also helped me in speaking English better. After the German dubbed versions, there was a local cable channel that had the English original in a re-run of the Bionic Woman. I think the first episode I watched -in English was the two-parter where she fights that Alex computer.
@marco Here in the US both shows are available to stream on Peacock.

@gedeonm had the 12ā€ action figure where you looked through the back of his head for bionic eyesight

No idea where it is now, but good ones with the accessories go for a reasonable price on evilBay

@bgrinter Yep, he was one of my favorite toys of all time. Loved you could roll his skin back and remove his bionic components.

@gedeonm only had the basic figure although my cousin had the bionic repair station

Forgo that he came with removable socks and sneakers

@gedeonm Is this on YouTube?

I remember being at my cousins' for a family party when this was on, and trying to find a place to watch it…

@Drwave I watched them both on Peacock.
