KDE vs. GNOME: Linux enthusiasts, developers, and users, which desktop environment do you prefer and why?

#linux #gnome #kde #technology #tech #desktop

@miqueiasklippel I've been enjoying #Linux #Mint #Debian Edition (LMDE). Previously, happy with XFCE on Debian

Fast, responsive, seems simple, logical, and easy enough to use.

@jrovu Mint holds a special place in my memory: it was what opened the doors to Linux and open source for me, back in my teens. Today I use Fedora, but I never stop looking back at my beloved Mint.

@miqueiasklippel I tried KDE for about 15 minutes. It felt like the standard start-bar style, and there were way too many options. It's clearly very well made, but it's not for me.

Gnome, on the other hand, you press *one* button, and it reveals the whole array of desktops and all the programmes you use regularly, and everything in the window you're looking at. I love it. It works for me. I also love extensions.

@OrionKidder The recent evolution of KDE has made me want to try it, but as a long-time Fedora user, I simply love GNOME. For me, it's that old maxim: simple works. Fedora and GNOME have always been a perfect combination.

@miqueiasklippel xfce... it reminds me of my youth. :-)

But whatever, really... a desktop environment should generally stay out of the way... And they all mostly do (on Linux). But for me the less change the better.

@poleguy I completely understand your point. There's nothing better than an interface where we know exactly where what we want is. I like GNOME for that reason: despite constantly evolving, it's simple and functional.
@miqueiasklippel KDE because I feel like I'm in control of the computer. I can make it fit my preferences and needs.
Gnome (and Gnome apps) on the other hand makes me want to scream even more than when using Windows 11.
@macberg Wow, strong words! 😅 This customization possibility is what attracts me to KDE, but I've been using Fedora with GNOME for many years and have a special relationship with both.
@miqueiasklippel I'm impressed by people who are equally fine with both KDE and Gnome. I don't know how you do it. 😄
@miqueiasklippel i am comfortable using both but i feel KDE does have far too many settings. Currently using #Niri as WMs are faster for my workflow
