@gerrymcgovern i stopped buying books from amazon the moment they killed the download option last year. Horrible business.
@gerrymcgovern Working perfectly fine after 14 years? They won't make that mistake again.
@PatrickOBeirne @gerrymcgovern but what is it that is being killed? Don't the devices just continue working perfectly fine to read side-loaded books?
(i never had a kindle and don't know how closed it is)
@douwe @gerrymcgovern
I've no idea about sideloading. We have an old one and had to upgrade a couple of years ago.
Your Kindle's not obsolete, it just needs a jailbreak - and I'll show you how it's done

You can transform your old Kindle - even a bricked device - into the ultimate open-source reader. Here's how.

@gerrymcgovern I just bought 3 pocket books today at my local bookstore. I never bought anything from Bozo from Amazon.
@gerrymcgovern All I can think of in response is to encourage everyone to check out books from your local public library. Or buy from a bookstore. Even better, buy from an independently owned used bookstore if that’s possible in your area. Read a book with actual pages that won’t need recharging or be made obsolete.
@coleenwalter I always try and buy my books from kennys.ie (Ireland). A wonderful independent bookstore based in Galway. Been around for ages and ages and always excellent service and choice.
@gerrymcgovern We have Powell’s Books in the US that sells used and new books. Bookshop.org too. I am a strong supporter of our library system in the US due to its advocacy for literacy and equal access to books. They also function as community centers.
@coleenwalter Libraries are amazing places. In Ireland too they have become a hub for community and arts
@coleenwalter and if you like ebooks or e-audiobooks those are also available from your local library. electronic books benefit libraries because they take up no space, do not have to be physically handled or shuttled between branches, are never overdue or lost, and people like them. Libraries love giving people what they want.
