\o/ VLC in space

@videolan

also i’m pretty sure this is KDE… not 100% positive, but that taskbar…
@domi looks like windows 10 with long titles in the bar
@domi isn't this just full height vista bar?
@pj @domi vista bar has never looked like this
@pj @domi you got another row of rectangles there instead of this
@jeder @domi it could be 7 with theme
@pj @domi only windows 10 has bullshit right of the clock
@jeder @domi well the screenshot quality is so ass I could even make GNOME look like this
@pj @jeder this is the best resolution i could get shrug
<----
I meant the stream or whatever (this person doesn't even know what is happening, is this artemis something related?)

@domi @jeder
@pj @jeder yeah i’m just artemisposting
@domi @pj KDE Plasma's taskbar can have applets anywhere. It also has a show desktop button there by default. @jeder
@jeder @pj @domi yeah looks like just windows 10(?) set to display labels for taskbar buttons
@[email protected] idk that looks like windows 10 to me
@lea it looks like a Microsoft Surface tablet (with two non-working versions of Microsoft Outlook)
@[email protected]
@domi it's too blurry to tell, it could just be windows 10
@domi While it would be pretty cool if it was, I doubt it. That looks like a Microsoft Surface, especially with the pen design.
@domi Also: I used to use a Surface Pro 3 with Windows 10 long ago and it looks identical to the device in that photo, which is why I say this.

@hexaheximal @domi yes, the personal computing devices are Surfaces
And of course they had the Outlook issues a few days ago so...Windows.

I remember when Debian went to space, when did that stop? 😭

@domi thats definitely windows, they were complaining about outlook not working
ngl that taskbar looks like windows 10 to me... hmm
CC: @[email protected]

@me @domi considering they've been talking about Outlook not working (lol), and it's apparently a Surface, Windows 10 seems pretty likely.

Thinking about when Artemis was spun up that would all make sense, and one imagines NASA paid for extended support.

still, I think it's pretty unusual to see Windoze 10 on an (I assume) modern Surface.

@me depends what you consider ‘modern’ I suppose, and this is almost certainly an enterprise managed deployment, so whatever shipped with whatever generation they are using (and I'd guess they probably aren't using the latest) is largely moot.

Sad it's not something more exciting, and less Microsoft, but for NASA's constraints this is probably reasonable :/

@domi According to NASA engineer Jason Hutt they're using old Windows tablets: "By using a device ISS was using, we would save money on certifying the hardware. … The operations software on the tablet was developed in Windows for ISS, so we needed a windows tablet."

I understand NASA aquired those devices in 2017 so I'd say that's Windows 10.
Jason Hutt (@jthutt.bsky.social)

By using a device ISS was using, we would save money on certifying the hardware. Every piece of equipment flown has to go through a series of testing. That testing takes time and money. The operations software on the tablet was developed in Windows for ISS, so we needed a windows tablet.

@domi @videolan VLC behind the dark side of the moon :)
@domi @videolan And unlike Outlook, it works!
@domi @videolan Or they threw a traffic cone into space and took a photo of it ^^
@domi FYI Video footage of the Mars rovers is processed with ffmpeg.

@domi @videolan

says reams about trust.

@domi @videolan would be funny if they landed a Flaschen-Taschen on the Moon next time, so we can control that from VLC 😄
@videolan @[email protected] Finally, the example usage of traffic cone in the space
@domi @videolan that cone has gone a long way 💜

@domi @videolan VLC worked fine, i'm afraid we cannot say the same for Outlook. Big win for FLOSS

VLC system requirments: being on this planet (optional)

@domi @videolan @thornbill Next mission to the moon, let's get Jellyfin setup for them!
@tgpo @domi @videolan that was my first thought! Onward and upward! 🚀

@domi @videolan

VLC has been the furthest from Earth as any human being.

@domi @videolan In space, nobody can hear you stream.
@avatastic @domi @videolan Is it because the bluetooth connection is broken again?

@domi @videolan

@bagder

Do we know if cURL is involved in the Artemis mission?
🙂🤷‍♂️

@simonzerafa @domi @videolan not more than it seems they use Windows 10/11 machines onboard and #curl is part of that...
@domi @videolan That's a tiny bit more niche product placement than the Nutella jar. But excellent.
@domi @videolan might even be the only software that works up there
@domi @videolan inside you, are two outlooks. neither of them are working. But VLC works every time

@da_667 @domi @videolan little known fact you can open your email as a stream in vlc by specifying the file-url as imap://...

Not really but it sure sounded plausible right?

@da_667 @domi @videolan is this one of those situations where I must have VLC asking the two outlooks a question and invert the answer?
